DESKTOP

DESKTOP
 is the main screen area that you see
after you turn on your computer and
log on to Windows. Like the top of an
actual desk, it serves as a surface for
your work. When you open program or
folders, they appear on the desktop.
You can also put things on the desktop,
such as files and folders, and arrange
them however you want.
ICON
ICON – is a small graphical representation of a
program or file. When you double-click an icon, the
associated file or program will be opened.
Icon help the users quickly identify the type of
file represented by the icon. The image to the right is
an example of “My Computer” icons in different
versions of Microsoft Windows.

Tips: Users can quickly rename ay highlighted Windows


icon by pressing F2 key on the keyboard, and then
typing in a new name.
A DIRECTORY is a location for storing files on
your computer. Directories are found in
a hierarchical file system, such as Linux, MS-
DOS, OS/2, and Unix.
A file is the common storage unit in a
computer. All programs and data are contained in
a file, and the computer reads and writes files. A
folder holds one or more files, and it can be empty
with just a name,

RECYCLE BIN - is temporary storage for files that have


been deleted in a file manager by the user, but not
yet permanently erased from the file system. It can
be accessed from the desktop or Windows Explorer
or by typing shell:RecycleBinFolder in the Run dialog
box.
Where did my desktop go?
 Because programs run on top of the
desktop, the desktop itself is often
partially or completely hidden. But it's still
there, underneath everything. To see the
whole desktop without closing any of your
open programs or windows, click the
Show Desktop button on the taskbar. The
desktop is revealed. Click the icon again
to restore all of your windows to the way
they were.
Working with desktop icons
 Icons are small pictures that represent
files, folders, programs, and other items.
When you first start Windows, you'll see at
least one icon on your desktop: the
Recycle Bin (more on that later). Your
computer manufacturer might have
added other icons to the desktop. Some
examples of desktop icons are shown
below.
