FOUR MAJOR
TEXT TYPES NARRATIVE ESSAY (TELLING A STORY)
• Writer tells a story about real-life experience.
• Involve the reader by making the story lively. • It is written in the first person it helps engage the reader • “I” sentences give readers a feeling of being part of the story • It builds the readers conclusion or making personal statement DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY (PAINTING A PICTURE)
• Paints a picture with words.
• Describe a person, place, object or even memory of special significance. • Strives to communicate a deeper meaning through description. • The writer should show (not tell) • Use colorful words and sensory details • It’s appeal to the reader’s emotions with a highly evocative result EXPOSITORY ESSAY (JUST THE FACTS)
• Informative piece of writing
• Presents a balance analysis of a topic • The writer explains or defines a topic, using facts, statistics and examples • Based on facts not personal feelings • Writers don’t reveal their emotions • Write in the 1st person point of view PERSUASIVE ESSAY (CONVINCE ME) • The goal is to convince the reader to accept the writer’s pt of view • The writer must build a case using facts and logic as well as examples, expert opinion and sound reasoning. • It should present all sides of the argument. • It must be able to communicate clearly and without equivocation why a certain position is correct.
