8 Context of Text Development - Federico M. Gelido

The document discusses how context influences text development. It defines intertext as a work whose meaning references or alludes to other texts, such as Chronicles of Narnia alluding to the Bible. Hypertext is characterized by external links embedded in a text that allow readers to navigate to related information. The writing process and an author's various influences contribute to a text's context. Students should understand how intertext and hypertext relate to text development and be able to identify forms of intertext like parody, imitation, pastiche, transposition, and continuation.

CONTEXT OF TEXT

DEVELOPMENT
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the
students should be able to:
 Identify the various contexts in

text development and show

hypertext in text as it relates to
text development.
 Define intertext in text

development.
 Have you ever wondered why a
text would seem familiar? It is as
if you have known it before and
seen it somewhere.
 Is there a connection from one
text to another?
 Are these texts related in some
ways?
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT
IS DEVELOPED
 Look into the writing
process.
 It is through the writing

process that the text will

materialize.
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT
IS DEVELOPED
 The doer of the writing
process is the writer or the
author who will conceive a
text.
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT
IS DEVELOPED
 At times, an idea comes out
from another idea, which
results into a number of
texts.
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT
IS DEVELOPED
Example: the beauty of Anda

An author accumulates notes,

figures, photos, videos.
Then he writes one poem and
one story.
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT
IS DEVELOPED
 The structure of writing is
composed of grammar,
vocabulary, and semantics.
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT
IS DEVELOPED
 Grammar – the set of rules on
how to use the words in
writing and composing
writers.
 Vocabulary – ownership of

words and them number of

terms one knows.
 Semantics – about meaning

or relationship of meanings.
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT
IS DEVELOPED
 What writing product would
you like to work on?
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT
IS DEVELOPED
 Would you like to:
Publish?
Tell a story?
Make a correspondence?
Keep historical records?
Disseminate knowledge?
Abide by a legal system?
Simply express yourself?
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT IS
DEVELOPED
 How would you proceed in
writing?
Narration
Exposition
Analysis
Examination
Evaluation
Persuasion
Description
Summary
Response
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT IS
DEVELOPED
 Without the author/writer, there
can be no text conceptualization.
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT IS
DEVELOPED
 All contexts that surround the
author will therefore add to the
layers of context –
His background
Lifestyle
Genre
Nationality
Age
Influence
Events that beset him
CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT IS
DEVELOPED
 Not one text would have been
composed without any outside
influence.
 There is always a social
dimension to a work.
HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
 An INTERTEXT refers to a work
whose meaning is shaped by
referencing or calling to mind
other texts.
 Parallelism (of the 2 texts) in
plot, characters, premise, among
others.
HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
 Example of INTERTEXT:

 The Chronicles of Narnia: The

Lion, the Witch, and the
Wardrobe by CS Lewis
 It alludes to the Bible
 Edmund’s betrayal and Aslan’s
sacrifice vis-à-vis Judas’ betrayal
and the crucifixion of Jesus
HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
 A work set in HYPERTEXT is
characterized by the external
links embedded in a text by the
writer.
 In a hypertext, the reader can
read the text in a non-linear way,
because he is led to other links
outside the main text.
HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
 A work set in HYPERTEXT also
enables the reader to arrive at
the intended interpretation,
because he is led to where the
author exactly wants him to go.
 The context is taken through
links or commentaries
HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
 Example of HYPERTEXT in print :
 The Pearl of the Orient Seas1 is

blessed with many beautiful

beaches, but Boracay2 still
remains one of the most popular
tourist destinations.
1
A historical moniker given to the
Philippines
2
A small island in Aklan, Visayas
HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
 Example of HYPERTEXT:

Get from Encarta, Web

HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
Forms of INTERTEXT
1. Parody
2. Imitation
3. Pastiche
4. Transposition
5. Continuation
HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
Forms of INTERTEXT
1. Parody – it makes light of a
situation. This should not just be
a simple imitation, but should be
another work transformed.
HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
Forms of INTERTEXT
2. Imitation – shows another work
in the same likeness.
HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
Forms of INTERTEXT
3. Pastiche – almost the same as
parody
instead of making fun of an
original work, it pays respect to
the original.
HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
Forms of INTERTEXT
4. Transposition – It is the change
of order, shift in place, or
alteration.
HYPERTEXT AND INTERTEXT
 Forms of INTERTEXT
5. Continuation – A work that is a
sequel of another work.
If there is a source, it can be
made into a sequel of something.
Usually done in films
ASSIGNMENT/Performance
Task:
 Lookfor a written text.
Make an intertext out of
it.
