Polygonal Modeling

This document provides instructions for modeling a polygonal hammer surface in Maya 2018. It describes creating a cube primitive and extruding faces to form the basic hammer shape. Techniques covered include splitting and extruding polygons, using manipulators to shape extruded surfaces, and subdivision to add detail. The steps conclude by smoothing edges and adding a depression to the hammerhead.

MAYA 2018

POLYGONAL MODELING
MODELING A POLYGONAL SURFACE
MODELING
- refers to the process of creating virtual 3D surfaces for the
characters and objects
POLYGON SURFACES
- a surface type comprised of flat surfaces called faces
POLY MESH
- a single polygonal face or a network of polygonal faces

Three modeling surface types in Maya:

• Polygons
• NURBS
• Subdivision surfaces
CREATING A FOUNDATION SHAPE
● Create > Polygon Primitives > Cube >
● Options > Edit > Reset Settings
● Shading > Smooth Shade All / Press 5
● Scale the cube into the general shape of a hammer handle
● Right-click the cube and select Face
● Select the face center at the top of the cube
● Edit Mesh > Extrude
● Drag the blue arrow up to extrude the face
SPLITTING POLYGONS
The split polygon tool no longer exists in Maya 2018

Option 1:
● Use the MEL command instead:
“SplitPolygonTool”

Option 2:
● Use the Multi-Cut Tool
● Right-click the cube and select Vertex
● Select the vertices at the top and bottom of the
edge that divides the two faces
● Split Vertex is no longer in Maya 2018, use this
instead:
○ Edit Mesh > Detach
● Right-click the cube and select Face
● Shift-select the two split faces
● Edit Mesh > Extrude >
○ Divisions = 6
● Drag the blue arrow outward
● Drag the red scale manipulator inward to narrow
the blades
● Drag the green scale manipulator up to flatten the
blades at their tips
USING THE POLY EXTRUDE MANIPULATOR

● Click the large circle surrounding the manipulator

● Drag the red circular manipulator down a bit to
rotate the extrusion
● Drag down the green and blue arrows a short
distance to begin shaping the claw downward
● Right-click any part of the surface and select
Vertex
● Each subdivision of the claw has a group of
vertices
● Move each of these groups down or up a small
distance to make the claw arch downward. (Drag
one group of the vertices at a time.)
● You can shift-drag to constrain the movement of
EXTRUDE POUNDING HEAD OF THE
HAMMER
● Select the back face of the hammer

● Edit Mesh > Extrude > > Division = 1

● Pull forward then select scale tool and drag inward to shrink the

overall scale

● Edit Mesh > Extrude > > Division = 1

● Pull forward then select scale tool and drag outward to increase the

overall scale
DEPRESSION AT THE TOP OF THE HAMMER

● Select the face at the center top of the

hammerhead
● Edit Mesh > Extrude >
● Scale inward
● Edit Mesh > Extrude >
● Push downward
SUBDIVIDING POLYGON FACES
● Shift-select the faces of the handle, including the bottom face
● Edit mesh > Add Division
○ Add Division = Exponentially
○ Division levels = 2
● Right-click the hammer and select Vertex
● Press 4 to display the hammer in wireframe mode
● Scale each row of vertices on the handle inward as desired
SMOOTHING EDGES

● Select edges you want to smooth by selecting the

faces
● Mesh > Smooth >
● Use Edit Mesh > Delete Edge/Vertex if there are
any improperly positioned edges
● Use Multi-Cut Tool to add an edge
