Electric Drives 1

Electric drives use electric motors to provide mechanical energy for motion control. They have several advantages over other drive systems, including a wide range of available torque and speed, adaptability to different operating conditions, and lack of pollution. Electric drives can also operate in all four quadrants of the speed-torque plane and start instantly without needing to warm up. However, they have higher initial costs and can cause noise pollution. Electric drives are generally classified as group drives, which power multiple machines from a line shaft, or individual drives, which power a single machine.

ELECTRIC DRIVES

Electric Drives

• Systems employed for motion
control are called as Drives.

• It may employ any of prime movers such as diesel

or petrol engines, gas or steam turbines, steam
engines, hydraulic motors and electric motors, for
supplying mechanical energy for motion control.

• Drives employing electric motors are called

as
ADVANTAGE OF ELECTRIC
DRIVES

• The electrical drives are available in a wide range of
torque, speed and power.
• They are adaptable to any
almostsuch as explosive operating and
conditions
Environment , submerged in radioactive
liquids ,
vertical mounting and so on.

• The electrical drive does not pollute

the environment.
ADVANTAGE OF ELECTRIC
DRIVES

• It can operate in all four quadrants of speed
torque plane.

• They can be started instantly and can

immediately be fully loaded. i.e., there is no need
to refuel or warm up the motor.

• They have flexible control characteristic and can

be employed to automatically control the drive.
DISADVANTAGE OF ELECTRIC
DRIVES

• The power failure completely disabled the whole of
the system.

• The application of the drive is limited because it

cannot use in a place where the power supply is not
available.

• It can cause noise pollution.

• The initial cost of the system is high.

CLASSIFICATION OF ELECTRIC
DRIVES

 Generally classified into 3 categories:

• Group drive
• Individual Drive
GROUP DRIVE

• Electrical drives

that is used to
drive two or more
than two
machines from
line shaft through
belts or pulleys is
known as group
drive.
GROUP DRIVE

ADVANTAGES :-
• The cost of installation is less .
• Maintenance cost is less.
• Has overload capacity.

DISADVANTAGES :-
• Failure of motor paralyses the whole system.
• Scope of addition of machines is limited.
• Large noise is produced.
INDIVIDUAL DRIVE

• In Individual Drive, a
single motor is used to
drive one individual
machine. Such A drive is
very common in most
of the industries.
INDIVIDUAL DRIVE

ADVANTAGES :-
• More clean and safety.
• Alternate motor can be used in case of failure of one of
the motor.
• Continuity in production is ensured to higher degree.

DISADVANTAGES :-
• High initial cost.
• Power loss is high.
CLASSIFICATION
OF INDUSTRIAL LOADS

Industrial loads can be classified into four general
categories :-

1. Constant load torque

2. Torque proportional to speed
3. Torque proportional to square of speed
4. Torque inversely proportional to speed
