Surge Impedance & Surge Impedance Loading: Compiled By, Prof Shivam Shrivastava Ap-Ee, Itnu

This document discusses surge impedance and surge impedance loading of transmission lines. It defines characteristic impedance as the natural impedance of a transmission line considering losses, while surge impedance neglects losses. Surge impedance loading occurs when a transmission line is terminated with a resistance equal to its surge impedance, allowing it to operate at its nominal capacity. Proper surge impedance loading is important for determining a line's maximum power transfer, as it ensures reactive power is balanced with no reflections.

Surge Impedance
Loading

Contents:
• Characteristic Impedance or Natural Impedance
• Surge Impedance
• Surge Impedance Loading
• Significance of Surge Impedance
• Common Doubts of Performance of Transmission Line
Characteristic Impedance
•  It is natural impedance of transmission line considering the losses.
=
Where : z = r+jωL
y = g+jωC
Surge Impedance
•  For Lossless transmission lines r = 0 , g = 0.
=
Because in case of power surges losses are neglected so characteristic
impedance becomes surge impedance.
Surge Impedance Loading (SIL)
•  SIL of transmission line is the power transmitted when the line is
terminated through a resistance equal to surge impedance.
• The term surge impedance loading or SIL is often used to indicate the
nominal capacity of the line.
=
Where : V = Transmission Line voltage
= Surge Impedance
Significance of Surge Impedance.
• It is a important parameter for the determining the maximum loading
capacity ( MW loading ) of transmission line.
• When a purely resistive load of value equal to surge impedance is
connected at the receiving end of the line, then the reactive power
generated by the shunt capacitor will be completely absorbed by the
series inductor of the transmission line.
Cont..
• If a lossless transmission line terminates in its surge impedance (i.e. if
the load is a pure resistance of value equal to the surge impedance of
the line), then that transmission line is known as the infinite line
or flat line.

• In this amount of reactive power absorbed is equal to amount of

reactive power delivered.
Common doubts in Performance of
Line.
• How transmission line is classified?
• What is Ferranti effect?
• Which is more preferred Nominal T or Nominal Pi in medium T/L.
