THE NATURE OF

THE GOOD!!!
What is good?
Almsgiving
Firearms
Communism
Contraceptives
Childlabor
“ Someone came to him.. “
For the young man, the question is not so much about
rules to be followed, but about the full meaning of life. This
is in fact the aspiration at the heart of every human
decision and action, the quiet searching and interior
prompting which sets freedom in motion.
This question is ultimately an appeal to the absolute
Good which attracts and beckons us; it is the echo of a call
from God who is the origin and goal of man’s life.
In order to make this “encounter” with Christ
possible, God willed his Church.

“ Teacher, what good must I do to have eternal life?

It is an essential and unavoidable question for the life
of every man, for it is the moral good which must be done,
and about eternal life.
People today need to turn to Christ once again in order
to receive from him the answer to their questions about
what is good and what is evil.
“There is only one who is good”
The answer to the question, What
good must I do to have eternal life?
Can only be found by turning one’s
mind and heart to the “one” who is
good; Only God can answer the
question about what is good,
ultimately means to turn towards
God.
CENTER OF VALUE
The convictions we have about God form the presuppositions of
the moral life. The basic conviction that God is good. The only
center of value and fixed point of reference for morality.
CENTER OF VALUE
 The nature of the good is the full actualization of any
being’s potential.
 What is God enabling and requiring me to be or to do?
GOD - CENTER OF VALUE

 The Christian cannot do justice to his

moral experiences and beliefs
without seeing all things as being
dependent on God and without
referring to God in some way as the
source and goal of it all.

 God is the horizon with in which the

believer sees and values all things
GOD AS CREATOR

Nothing which exists has chosen to be, but

that all is radically dependent on the source of
being.

A sense of dependence upon one another and

ultimately upon God. It entails the self
awareness of human persons as stewards of
creation who seek to preserve the good which
God has created but sometimes we lost the
sense of interdependency and fall to the
temptation of radical self sufficiency.
GOD AS BENEFICENT
Belief that God gives freely and in love.
We have received freely we ought to give freely.

The experience of God giving generously implies that we

ought to care for what has been given to us and we ought to
share it freely, justly and lovingly.

GOD AS END OF ALL CREATION

A sense of direction in the moral life.
Human Person are to act in accord with their final end - -
Communion with God.

To have one’s fundamental intention in the moral life

oriented towards God gives a sense of integrity and
coherence in moral life.
“ If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments”

God has already given an answer to this question. He did so by

creating man and ordering him with wisdom and love to his final
end, through the law which is inscribed in his heart. The natural
law is nothing other than the light of understanding infused in us
by God, whereby we understand what must be done and what
must be avoided. God gave this light and this law to man at
creation.

The ten commandments are part of God’s revelation. At the same

time they teach us man’s true humanity. They shed light on the
essential duties, and so indirectly on the fundamental rights,
inherent in the nature of the human person.

Without love of neighbor made concrete in keeping the

commandments, genuine love for God is not possible.

Jesus brings God’s commandments to fulfillment, particularly the

commandment of love of neighbor, by interiorizing their demands
and by bringing out their fullest meaning.
“LOVE FOR NEIGHBOR” THE FULLEST MEANING
IMAGE OF GOD

Human is the summit of all creation.

Formed according to the image and likeness of
God. ( Gen.1:26-27 )
Sacredness and dignity of every person.
God has so established a relationship with us that
the human person cannot be properly understood
apart God.
We are to live in communion with God and others.
