ENGD1009 Communication System Lab Session: 7 Digital Communication Chapter 3: The MODICOM 3 PCM Receiver

This document provides instructions for a lab session on digital communication using a MODICOM 3 PCM receiver. It introduces the lab instructors and gives their contact information. It then provides initial setup instructions for the MODICOM 3/1 transmitter board and MODICOM 3/2 receiver board. Finally, it outlines two exercises for students - the first involves using a Pico scope to measure the output of a D/A converter on the receiver board, and the second involves using the scope to observe reconstruction of an analog waveform from PAM samples.

Initial Conditions on the MODICOM 3/1board

• Mode switch in FAST position.

• Sync.Code Generator “on/off” switch to OFF
position
• Error check code selector switches to
OFF(00) position.
• All four switched faults to OFF position.
• DC1/ DC2 and 1KHz/2KHz amplitude
presets in the Function generator should be
set at fully clock wise position.

Instructions for the Experiment
Practical Exercise 3.22- Digital to Analog Conversion

• Connect the CH0 input to DC1 output and CH1 input to CH0
input on the MODICOM 3/1 board as shown in the figure.
• Connect the Pico scope’s channel A probe to tp30 of MODICOM
3/2 board.
• Adjust the DC1 preset on the MODICOM 3/1 board to apply the
digital codes given in your workbook to the D/A converter.
• Now, measure the voltage at the output of the D/A converter
(tp30) on the MODICOM 3/2 board.
• Observe the voltage in the Pico scope.
• Record the Measured voltage value in your work book.
• Write your comments on the Output in Notes space given in your
workbook.

Instructions for the Experiment
Practical Exercise 3.24 – Reconstruction of Analog waveform from PAM samples

• Connect the 1KHz output to CH0 input on the MODICOM 3/1 board as shown
in the figure.
• Connect the Pico scope’s channel A probe to tp10 of MODICOM 3/1 board.
• Now, Connect the Pico scope’s channel B probe to tp30 of MODICOM 3/2
board.
• Record the results in your workbook.
• Write your comments on the Output in Notes space given in your workbook.
• Now, Connect the Pico scope’s channel A probe to tp50 and channel B probe to
tp30 in the MODICOM 3/2 board.
• Move the channel B probe to tp32 in the MODICOM 3/2 board.
• Record the results in your workbook.
• Follow the same instruction for CH1 sample.
• Write your comments on the Output in Notes space given in your workbook
