Extra Gauge Widening: Waim Akshay Ravindra

The document discusses extra gauge widening on railway tracks. It explains that on curved tracks, the inner and outer wheels of railway carriages can hit the rails due to the rigid wheelbase. To prevent this flange binding, railways provide extra clearance by widening the gauge. The standards laid by Indian Railways specify adding 10mm extra width for curves with radii less than 350m for broad gauge and 290m for meter gauge, and 15mm extra for curves with radii less than 100m. For an example curve with radius 168m, the required extra width is calculated based on wheelbase, wheel diameter and flange projection.

Extra gauge widening

Waim Akshay Ravindra

Extra widening of gauge
• When travelling on a straight track, the wheelbase travels in an alignment
without flanges hitting the rail head
• Thus, there is flange-binding which is responsible for wear and tear of the
flange of the wheel as well the head of the track

Extra widening of gauge
• Problem occurs when the wheel tries to ply on the curved track.
• The wheelbase/chassis of the rail bogey is rigid i.e. it can't bend with change
in curvature
• Because of this, the flanges of the outer and inner wheel start hitting the rail-
head

VNR VJIET
Extra widening of gauge
• For this reason, a clearance width is provided so that the flanges stay clear off
the rail
• This prolongs the life of the rail and prevents flange binding

Extra widening of gauge
• The wheelbase of a vehicle moving on the BG track is 6m. The diameter of the
wheels is 1524mm and flanges project 32mm below the top of the rail
• Determine the extra width required if radius is 168m. Also indicate the extra
width provided by the IR standards
