Narrative Text
What is Narrative Text ?

A narrative or story is any report of connected events, actual or


imaginary, presented in a sequence of written or spoken words, or still
or moving images
The Purpose Of Narrative Text

• To amuse or entertain the reader

• To gain and hold the readers’ interestto gain and hold a readers'

• To deal with actual / imaginative experiences in different ways


Narrative Text Organization

Orientation
• This sets the scene, creating athmosphere of the setting and time
of the story.
• Characters are introduced and clues are set in place for the
coming complication.

Complication
• Where the story of the promblem developed
• The problem or the complication occurs that affects the setting,
time, and characters
• The events where the characters attempts to solve the problem

Resolution
• Containing the solution for the problem
• The problem really solved and the story end

Coda
It consists of moral lesson and advice from the writer
Example of Narrative Text + Structure
The Mouse And The Frog
Once, there was a mouse that made close
friendship with a frog. Orientation
One day, the frog said to the mouse; “Let’s bind
ourselves together with a string so that we may
never get separated”. The mouse agreed. Both Complication
tied themselves together leg to leg. It went quite
well on land. When they came to a small pool, it
was a tragic for the mouse.
In the end, the frog kept swimming across the
small pool dragging the mouse with him. Soon,
the mouse drowned and floated on the surface of Resolution
the pool.
Points of View

First Person
• Character speak directly to the reader
• Helps author to reveal thoughts and feeling in an intimate way

Example : (Humpty Dumpty)


I am sitting on top of the cold sandstone wall, gazing at the horizon.
I’m worry I might fall off and hurt myself.
Points of View

Second Person
• Not used often in narrative writing
• Widely used by non-fiction writer
• Written in an easy style as if talking directly to the reader

Example : (Humpty Dumpty)


You should see him sitting there on that wall. You wonder what he’s
thinking about. You imagine that he might fall

Third Person
• The writer knows everything about the characters
• The writer can see inside the character minds
• The writer know what the character are thinking and feeling
Example : (Humpty Dumpty)
Humpty Dumpty is sitting calmly on top of the sandstone wall,
gazing at the horizon. He wonders whether he might fall off and hurt
himself.

Fable
Characteristic :
• Talking animal
• Teach a lesson
• Usually short

Example :
 The Lion and The Mouse
 The Smart Monkey and Dull Crocodile

Characteristic :
Combine a real event or real person’s unusual life story with the
exaggreration or heroic action

Characteristic :
Folktale is a story that has been told for a long time by a group of
people.
Example :

Fairy Tale
Characteristic :
Fairy tale is a type of short story that not really happen. It consist of
fantasy characters, magical world, and sometimes ends happily ever
after.

 The Use of Past Tense
Simple Past is used to talk about an activity or situation that began
and ended at a particular time in the past. (e.g.,yesterday, last night,
days ago, in 1999)

 The Use Of Action Verb
• Action verb is a verb that expresses physical or mental action
• The action verb tells us what the subject of our clause or sentence is
doing-physically or mentally.
• To find an action verb:
1) Find the word in the sentence that is something someone can do.
2) Remember that the action can be physical or mental
e.g. :
 Marie walked to school
 I think it will rain today
Language Features
 The Use Of Conjunctions
We commonly join words, phrases and/ or sentences together in a
narrative. The words to join are called Conjunctions.
Type of Conjunction Examples e.g. :
Time After, before, since, while, when, as The village was flood. It had
Result So, so that been raining for several
days.
Contrast Although, though, even though, while
Reason as, because, in case, for  The village was flood
Purpose so that, in order that because It had been
