Dear Parents,

Your child will be taking the Scholastic Literacy Pro Reading assessment at home. The result of
the test will tell us your child’s reading ability level and will also help us determine books that
match his/her reading proficiency. This test is normally taken at school with a facilitator but
given the circumstance, we would like to request you to help facilitate the taking of the test.

Your child may take the pretest on August 20, 2020 from2:00 – 3:00 pm

take the test only once.

Below are important reminders you can explain to your child before s/he takes the test.
1. Read each passage and question at least two times before the right answer is chosen.
2. Use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar or difficult words in the passages
or sentences. Refrain from using a dictionary or opening websites like Google to look for
definition or meaning.
3. The Literacy Pro test is not a speed test. The test will take a minimum of fifteen minutes to
an hour depending on how test is answered.
4. Three skips are allowed. Skipping does not affect the succeeding test questions nor the
Lexile. Please remind your child to use each skip wisely.

An explicit guide on how to take the Literacy Pro test is provided in the next page. Kindly refer to
the numbered steps.

We understand your concern and desire to help your child do well in the pretest. However, we
ask you to please observe the following to keep the integrity of the test.
5. Refrain from reading the passages and questions to your child. Please allow your child to
answer the assessment on his/her own.
6. Allow your child to identify the meaning of unfamiliar or difficult words s/he might
encounter. Advise him/her to use context clues.

Helping is caring, but if we really want to know our child’s comprehension ability, we need to
allow him/her to take this test by him/herself.
