what is happening in the
remaining four pictures.
Useful structures

● The examiner asks the student some personal questions.

For example: school, holidays, birthdays, family and hobbies.

● There are no pictures in this part.

A.When do I use much and many?
We use ‘much’ and ‘many’ :

 After negative verbs: I didn’t have much money.


 In questions: How much water do you need?
 After as/so/too: It takes too much time to walk to school.

Much for uncountable nouns


Many for countable nouns
Common mistakes in KET exam
A.When do I use much and many?
- We don’t use much/many after positive verbs.
- We use a lot of/lots of

B. Like, would like and want
- We use like to talk about things that please us:
Example: I like your new glasses.

- We use would like and want when we make offers:

Example: ‘Would you like something to eat?’


(not Do you like something to eat?)

C. When do I use doing after verbs?


- We use the –ing form after these verbs:
Example: enjoy, finish, stop
I enjoy listening to music.

- We also use the –ing form after an adjective + preposition:


Example: I’m interested in learning Chinese.

- We say go + -ing with a lot of sports.
Example:
We can go swimming.

D. Old, Older, Oldest


- We add –er to the adjective (old) to make the comparative and the + -est to make the
superlative (the oldest)

- For example:

- Some comparatives and superlatives are irregular.

- For example:

Bad worse the worst

Far further the furthest

E. How do I use at and in with places?


- We usually use ‘in’ with places when we say where a person or thing is:

For example: I live in a town in the south of Italy.

- We use ‘in’ in the following expressions:

in bed, in hospital, in the sky, in the world, in a book,


in a photo/picture

- We usually use ‘at’ with:

Events: at a party, at a concert, at a football match


Very precise location: at the door, at the bus stop

- We use at in the following expressions:

At school, at home, at college, at university, at the airport, at the station, at the cinema,

at the top/at the bottom (of the page)

F. When do I use at, in and on with time expressions ?


- We use ‘at’ with:

A. Time
B. Festivals
C. At the weekend, at night, at the beginning, at the time.

A. Months, seasons, years (in June, in spring, in 2008)


B. Parts of the days (in the afternoon, in the evening)

A. Days of the week and parts of named days (on Monday)


B. Named festival days (on New Year’s Day, on May Day)
