Cross Drainage Works PPT Final

This document provides an overview of river training and cross drainage works. It discusses common river training techniques like embankments, guide bunds, spurs, and geo bags which are used to improve rivers and prevent flooding and erosion. It also describes different types of cross drainage works needed where a natural stream crosses an irrigation canal, including aqueducts, siphons, super passages, and level crossings. Key factors in selecting the appropriate cross drainage work include relative bed levels, water levels, and size of the canal and drainage. Proper site selection considers minimum disturbance, suitable foundation, headway, and topography.

RIVER TRAINING
• River training refers to the structural measures
which are taken to improve a river and its banks
• Its an important measure for prevention of flood
and erosion.
• Effective disposal of sediment
Examples of river training
Some common river training includes
Embankment or levees
Guide bunds, Marginal bunds
bandalling
Spurs, Groyne
Porcupine, crib
Artificial cutoff
Pitch island
Geo tubes and Geo bags

CROSS DRAINAGE WORKS

A “cross drainage work” is a hydraulic

structure which needs to be constructed at the
crossing of a natural stream and an irrigation
canal flowing normally at right angles
underneath or over the natural stream.
Types Of Cross Drainage Works:
Irrigation Canal passes over the drainage:
In this type of C.D work, an irrigation canal is taken
over the drainage
a) Aqueduct
b) Siphon Aqueduct
2-Drainage passes over the irrigation
canal:
 In this type of cross drainage work, drainage is taken over
the canal
a) Super Passage:
b) Siphon Super passage:
c) Canal Siphon:
3-Drainage and Canal intersection at the
same level:

a)Level Crossing
b)Inlet and Outlet
Suitability of Cross-Drainage Works:
The factors which affect the selection of the suitable
type of cross drainage works are:
1. Relative bed levels and water levels of the canal
and drainage
2. Size of the canal and the drainage
Proper Site For Drainage Crossing

minimum disturbance
 Suitable foundation
 Sufficient headway
existing topography
