Electromagnetic waves can be described by the equation E = E0 sin(ωt - kz). The wavelength λ depends on the frequency f and propagation speed v. In a medium, λ is shorter than in free space due to the lower propagation speed. Optical power is attenuated according to the Beer-Lambert law. Dispersion causes different wavelengths to travel at different speeds, spreading pulses. Solitons can propagate without changing shape. The information capacity of an optical fiber is limited by dispersion and the source bandwidth. Reflection and transmission at interfaces depend on polarization and incident angle according to Fresnel's equations.
