Reported Speech

Reported speech is used to report what someone said in the past. When reporting speech, the tense may change and pronouns, determiners, places, and times are normally adjusted. For example, "I'm at school" would become "He said he was at school." Questions are reported using verbs like "ask" followed by if or whether and a clause. Direct speech is converted to reported speech by adjusting grammar rules while maintaining the original meaning.

STATEMENTS AND IMPERATIVES

When reporting what someone said:

 we always use reporting verbs: say, tell, explain,
suggest, order, etc;
 We sometimes change tenses, when the reporting verb
is in the past simple;
 we change determiners and pronouns and time and
place words.
There is no change in the verb tense when the reporting
verb is in the present simple.
Carol: “I am skeptical.” Carol says she is skeptical.
