● These ideas give a useful starting point for finding order in qualitative
data

It is the key process in the analysis of qualitative social research data

● Classifying or categorizing individual piece of data


● Coupled with some kind of retrieval system

Together, these procedure allows one to retrieve materials which may of use
in future

● Coding as Physical Act

○ It refers to the specific physical form of filing


● Creating Codes

○ For the purpose of testing hypothesis, generated by prior theory in


the form of variables

○ Focus on open coding, axial coding & selective coding


Creating Codes
● Open coding  

○ This the initial classification and labelling of concepts in qualitive data


analysis
● Axial Coding

○ Aims to identify the core concepts

○ Involves regrouping of data


●  Selecting coding

○ Seeks to identify the central code, the one that other codes related to

● Writing memos or notes to oneself and others involved in the project 
● Strauss and Corbib (1998:217) distinguish three kinds of memos:

○ Code Notes

○ Theoretical Notes

○ Operational Notes
