Mathematics 7 - Quarter 2 - Module 1

The document provides information about various units of measurement related to length, volume, weight, mass, and time. It defines common units like inches, feet, meters, liters, grams, seconds, minutes, and hours. Conversion factors are also listed, such as how many grams are in a kilogram or how many seconds are in a minute. Different geometric shapes are defined with their respective formulas for calculating volume, such as cubes, rectangular prisms, cylinders, cones, spheres, and pyramids.

MEASUREMENT &
MEASURING
LENGTH
Measuring Length

Length
 Measurement of distance
 How long or how far something
is.
 Can measure with a ruler, meter
stick, and measuring tape
English System of
Measurement
 Most commonly used in the
United States.
 The basic units for length in
the English system of
measurements are the inch,
foot, yard and mile.
English System of
Measurement
Units of Length in the English
System:
1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in.)
1 yard (yd) = 3 feet (ft)
1 yard (yd) = 36 inches (in.)
1 mile (mi) = 1,760 yards (yd)
1 mile (mi) = 5,280 feet (ft.)
Metric System of
Measurement
 Also known as the SI based
system (International
System of Measurement)
The Metric System of
Measurement was
introduced in France in 1799.
It is the most convenient and “ideal
to use” system of measurement
because computations are easier in
this system since it uses the power
of 10.
The base unit for length in the
metric system is the meter.
MEASURING
VOLUME
Measuring Length

VOLUME
 It is the amount of space an
object contains or occupies.
 The volume of a container is
considered to be the capacity of
the container.
 This is measured by the
number of cubic units or the
amount of fluid it can contain
and not the amount of space
the container occupies.

 The base SI unit for volume is the
cubic meter ().
Aside from cubic meter, another
commonly used metric unit for
volume of solids is the cubic
centimeter (c or cc) while the
commonly used metric units for
volume of fluids are the liter (L) and
the milliliter (mL).

LESSON 16:
MEASURING
WEIGHT / MASS
Mass

Mass is the amount of matter

that something is made of.
The kilogram is the SI unit to
measure mass.
Mass is measured with a
triple balance beam.
Weight
Weight is a measurement of the
gravitational force on an object.
The base SI unit for weight is the
kilogram (kg)
For the English System of
Measurement, the base unit for
weight is the pound (lb).
Use spring scales to measure weight.
Here are some of the conversion factors
for these units:
1 kg = 2.2 lb
1 g = 1000 mg
1 metric ton = 1000 kg
1 kg = 1000 g
1 lb = 16 oz
Weight: Gram
The milligram is the
smallest unit, about the
weight of a hair.
The gram is
approximately the weight
of a raisin.
The kilogram is a about 2
pounds or the weight of
the textbook.
LESSON 17:
MEASURING
TIME
TIME
Measuring Time
 Time is a period during which an action or
event occurs.
 The SI unit for measuring time is the second.
Two types of notation in stating time:
12-hr notation – standard time
• a.m. or ante meridiem – from 12 midnight
to 12 noon
• p.m. or post meridiem – from 12 noon to
12 midnight
24-hr notation – military or astronomical time
Measuring Time
 Clock. Watch and calendar are the instrument
used to measure time
