MOTION

The document discusses motion and how to quantify and measure speed. It provides examples of calculating speed using the formula speed = distance/time. It discusses the units used to measure distance, time, and speed in both the English and metric systems. Examples are provided to demonstrate calculating speed when given distance and time, and calculating time or distance when given the other variables and the speed. The key information is that motion is the change in an object's position over time, speed can be calculated using distance and time, and examples are provided to practice these calculations in different scenarios.

Motion Quantified

In physics, the motion is the

change in position of an object with
respect to its surroundings in a
given interval of time.
MEASURING SPEED

The motion of a moving object is determined by its
speed. Speed is the measure of the distance covered
over a period of time. Speed is often expressed in terms
of kilometers per hour or meters per second.
There are two system of measurement that can be
used to measure speed – the English system and the
metric system.

SPEED

Example 1:
Alden covers a distance of 40 m with his
bike. If it took him 10 min. to bike the
distance, what is the speed of the bike?

Example 1:

Alden covers a distance of 40 m with his bike. If it took

him 10 min. to bike the distance, what is the speed of the
bike?

GIVEN: ASKED: FORMULA:
40 m = distance Speed = ? s=d/t
10 min = time

Solution:

d 40 m
S= = = 4m / min
t 10 min

the speed of the bike is 4m / min.

The unit for speed depends on the units
of distance and time. If the distance is
measured in kilometers, and time is
measured in hours, then the unit for speed
becomes kilometers per hour.

Example:
Alden covers a distance of 40 km with his
bike. If it took him 10 h to bike the distance,
what is the speed of the bike?

Example 1:

Alden covers a distance of 40 km with his bike. If it took

him 10 h. to bike the distance, what is the speed of the
bike?

GIVEN: ASKED: FORMULA:
40 km = distance Speed = ? s=d/t
10 h = time

Solution:

d 40 km
S= = = 4 km/hr
t 10 hr

the speed of the bike is 4 km/hr

TIME

Example 2:
Vilma walks at a speed of 5 km/hr. How
much time does he take to walk a distance
of 15 km?

Example 1:

Vilma walks at a speed of 5 kmph. How much time

does he take to walk a distance of 15 km?

GIVEN: ASKED: FORMULA:

15km = distance time = ? t=d/s
5 km/hr = speed

Solution:

d 15 km
t= = = 3 hr
d 5 km/hr

the time that he take is 3 hr

DISTANCE

Example 2:
Maria left home and traveled toward the
capital at an average speed of 80 km/hr. If
she reached her destination in 3hr. What
was the distance she traveled.

Example 1:

Maria left home and traveled toward the capital at an

average speed of 80 kmph. If she reached her
destination in 3h. What was the distance she traveled.
GIVEN: ASKED: FORMULA:
80 km/hr = speed Distance = ? d=sxt
3 hr = time

Solution:

d=sxt
d = 80km/hr x 3hr
d= 240km

the distance that she traveled is 240 km

Word Problem:

Anna covers a distance of 20km

everyday by using her scooter. If it took her
2h to reach the distance, what is the speed
of the scooter?

Example 1:

Anna covers a distance of 20km everyday by using her

scooter. If it took her 2hr to reach the distance, what is the
speed of the scooter?

GIVEN: ASKED: FORMULA:
20 km = distance Speed = ? s=d/t
2 hr = time

Solution:

d 20 km
S= = = 10 km/hr
t 2 hr

the speed of the scooter is 10 km/hr
