1) When Google famously allowed its engineers to spend 20 percent of their time
pursuing a passion, you spent your time on a cause dear to your heart. Please
describe it.

• Chade - Meng Tan had an epiphany to work on creating the conditions for the world peace in his
lifetime.
• He realized the solution might be to scale inner peace, Joy and compassion.
• Aligning peace, joy and compassion with success and profit would help to achieve the world peace
• Key to being compassion to the workplace was Emotional Intelligence.
• As a mindfulness meditator, he assembled team of experts and came out with Search Inside Yourself
Program.
• The learnings are, its very easy to describe what compassion means, but to make it practical it requires
lot of efforts
• The relation of Emotional Intelligence to the world peace shows, how an individual effort contributes
to the collective wellness.
• The alignment of compassion with success and profit shows the human nature of Expectation
2) Describe the strong link that exist between compassion and
happiness.
• Compassion is the happiest mental state recorder in neuroscience.
• A french monk Matthieu Ricard was first person to be examined an FMRI.
• Scientist asked to “meditate on the concept of compassion and will see what happens
in brain”.
• Results proved that compassion being the happiest human state.
3) You believe compassion not only makes us happy, It is also
good for business. How so?
• Compassion creates effective leaders
• Shares two important qualities like humility and ambitious
• Three characteristics of Compassion creates conditions for humility and ambition
• Compassion has the ability to inspire teams
• People begin to inspire each other which leads to deeper state and meaning to their work
• Compassion leads to positive customer experience
• Customer are happy and receives great service
• Greater creativity through empathy
4) You have said that google is a compassionate company, and
its expressions of compassion follow a pattern. Please explain.
• The way compassion is expressed is unique at Google when compared to other companies in
the following ways:
• Autonomy.
• They think big.
• Replicable.

• At Google, everybody cares about changing the world in some small way and serving the
greater good and there is lot of self-organization.
• Example: Three employees raised funds to build a medical Center in India where almost 2 lakh
people were living without single medical facility.
• These small groups experiment these initiatives and then it becomes company wide initiatives.

5) One of the chapters in your book is titled ‘Even an engineer can thrive on
emotional intelligence’ How do data-focused, quantitative types react to your
vision?
• Yes, Even an engineer can thrive on emotional intelligence, Engineers don’t react as if
its something new and very hard to understand but they are confused. The primary
reason engineers try to seek EI is due to Cognitive dissonance they possess.
• The factors which cause data focused, quantitative types to change their reactions on
Meng’s vision are
I. Scientific reasoning - Defining a scientific result/outcomes behind every work
II. Application (Action and result oriented) - Defining action, purpose and its results for
the work done
III. Precision of the language - Conversion of factual information to the précised
language they understand
6) Describe the role of Humility in creating a culture for
compassion
• Compassion is often regarded as having sensitivity, which is an emotional
aspect to suffering. It may be considered rational in nature and its
application understood as an activity also based on sound judgment. It
can be seen in the form of empathy, values, attitude, nature etc.
• Role of humility plays a major role in following ways:
• Helps in lifelong learning.
• Makes us work on critical self reflection.
• Helps in institutional accountability.
• Fixes the power imbalances in culture for compassion.
7) As indicated, your mission is to create the conditions for world peace in your
lifetime by scaling inner peace and compassion globally. Looking around today, are
you optimistic about your quest
• Mission for world peace can be attained with Efficacy of mindfulness at its fullest.
• Mindfulness can help to attain mental effectiveness which can be very powerful tool in this
attention economy
• Sharp focus - An ability to concentrate single-pointedly on any object of choice for as long as
an individual wants, with minimal effort. Which helps to be fully present with other people
or tasks.
• Open awareness – An ability to see clearly what is happening in our mind and make wise
choices about where to focus your attention.
• Regular “mindful performance breaks” is both time efficient and nourishing way to maintain focus
and clarity
• Mindfulness also helps to enhance Emotional Intelligence which is highly correlated with success.
Learnings from the Interview
• Compassion is being the happiest human state.
• Compassion helps in creating Leader, motivating team and helps to have
a better customer relationship management.
• Compassion brings Innovation, Persistent and autonomy to nature and
work.
• Humility along with compassion helps in Self Development and learnings,
brings responsibility, also helps to understand one Individual with self
reflection & brings balance in culture along with compassion.
