GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
2
Design of Slab Bridge
Design a reinforced concrete slab culvert for a National Highway crossing to suit the following data:
1. Carriage way - Two lane (7.5 m wide),
2. Foot paths - 1 m on ether side,
3. Clear span = 6 m,
4. Wearing coat = 80 mm,
5. Width of bearing = 400 mm,
6. Materials: M-25 Grade Concrete and Fe-415 Grade HYSD bars,
7. Loading-IRC Class AA tracked vehicle.

Design of Slab Bridge
Assuming moderate exposure conditions, clear cover = 40 mm Using 20 mm diameter HYSD bars as main
reinforcements with a clear cover of 40 mm,
Effective depth = [500 - 40 - 10] = 450 mm
Width of bearing = 400 mm
Effective span is the least of:
a) (Clear span + effective depth) = (6 + 0.45) m= 6.45 m
Cross Section of Deck Slab.
b) Centre to centre of bearings = (6 + 0.40) = 6.4 m

Check for Shear
For maximum shear at support, the IRC Class AA tracked vehicle is arranged as shown
= 169 kN
13
Check for Shear
Criterion, the Indian standard codes IS: 456-2000 and IRC: 112- 2011 has incorporated the shear strength enhancing
factor K which depends upon the depth of the solid slab. While the IS code specifies values of AT ranging from 1.00 to
1.30 for slabs of depths ranging from 300 to 150 mm respectively, the IRC code specifies an empirical equation of the
type.
IRC 112: Shear Strength Provisions; Cl: 10.3.2
IS 456: Shear Strength Provisions
14
Check for Shear
The ultimate shear strength of the reinforced concrete deck slab is checked by using the equation
