Bionic Contact Lenses: Kyle Ross, William Walsh, Curtis Brown
● History- Before bionic contact lenses there were a other attempts to integrate human eyesight
with a technological overlay these include but are not limited to
Google glass
These technologies were revolutionary for their time but, they didn’t quite seem to be practical
enough for the consumer. They were often large, silly looking, an cumbersome. Although in vr’s
case it has found a niche in gaming
ocumemetics
How does this technology work
● The implants take pictures with a video camera and turn it into representation
with high contrast.
● For the Argus 2 specifically, the camera is on a pair of glasses, and electrodes
are implanted into the retina.

Drawbacks
● Technology is still in its infancy, although working prototypes have been made
in the past
● The surgery will likely not be covered by insurance as it’s an elective surgery
● Might become obsolete requiring more surgery in the future to stay with
having the most up to date implants
Ethical Considerations
● One ethical consideration that we have to keep in mind is that this could tangibly
further the disparity between the poor, middle class, an wealthy.
○ For positions where eyesight is important such as a bus driver, a pilot, or a sniper a ocularly enhanced
person is likely to be considered more fit for that job than someone who has not had that implant/ surgery
● A bionic implant in the future could be exploited by hackers, corporations, or
governments to literally influence people's perceptions of reality in a way that benefits
them to some degree.
● If the technology is successfully implemented, it could possibly begin the process of
blurring the line between man an machine, causing a rift between unmodified humans
and cyborgs.
