Renewable Energy': and Its Impact On Environment and Human Life
Renewable Energy': and Its Impact On Environment and Human Life
1
Energy
Energy is power derived
from the use of physical or
chemical resources,
especially to provide light
and heat or to work
machines. There are two
major categories of energy:
●Non-renewable.
●Renewable
2
1. Non-Renewable Energy
Non-renewable energy resources are available in
limited supplies, usually because they take a long
time to replenish. The advantage of these non-
renewable resources is that power plants that use
them are able to produce more power on demand.
The non-renewable energy resources are:
● Coal
● Nuclear
● Oil
● Natural gas
3
Energy and Climate Change
When coal, natural gas and oil are burned to produce energy, they emit heat-trapping gases such as
carbon dioxide. This process of trapping heat is what drives climate change, and the failure to
address this problem is what's catalyzing the current climate crisis.
Fossil fuels are hydrocarbon-containing materials like coal or gas that are found in the Earth’s
crust and formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms. These energy
sources account for the majority of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.
If emissions continue unrestrained, the atmosphere could warm by as much as 2.7 degrees
Fahrenheit above pre industrial levels by the year 2040

2. Renewable Energy
Renewable resources, on the other hand,
replenish themselves. The five major
renewable energy resources are:
● Solar
● Wind
● Water
● Biomass
● Geothermal
5
Why Renewable Energy is better?
● Renewable energy emits no or low greenhouse gases. That’s good for the climate.
The combustion of fossil fuels results in a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute
to global warming. Most sources of renewable energy result in little to no emissions, even when
considering the full life cycle of the technologies.
● Renewable energy emits no or low air pollutants. That’s better for our health.
● Renewable energy makes the energy system resilient. That’s important to prevent power
shortages.
6
● Renewable energy is accessible to all. That’s good for development.
7
Why Renewable Energy is better?
8
Why Renewable Energy is better?
● Renewable energy creates jobs.
That’s good for the local community.
● Heating and cooling in buildings- Solar thermal water heaters, biomass boilers .geothermal
direct heat,heat pumps, etc.
● Industrial process heat
● In transport- Biofuel blends, drop-in biofuels, renewable electricity, electro-fuels such as
hydrogen.
Worldwide, renewables already supplied roughly 26% of electricity at the end of 2017. Yet, outside of
electricity, good news is still hard to come by. Electricity only represents 17% of the world’s energy
needs. About half of the energy is used for heating and cooling, one-third goes to the transport sector.
With less than ten percent renewables, these two sectors are both lagging far behind in decarbonisation.
