The document provides an overview of the semantic web in 3 sentences: The semantic web aims to create a web of data that can be understood by machines through the use of metadata to define the meanings and relationships of information. It involves defining ontologies and using technologies like URIs, RDF, and RDF Schema to publish data about resources that can then be linked and queried across the web. Examples of semantic web projects are FOAF for social networks and SIOC for online communities that apply these technologies to share machine-readable data about pages, users, and their relationships.

1. Introduction.

3. Web and Semantics.

9. Conclusions
Introduction:
2
 The semantic Web is a major research
initiative of the world wide Web Consortium
(W3C).

 To create a Metadata-rich Web of

resources.

 They should be displayed (HTML) or

syntactically(XML),but also by the meaning
of the metadata.
Metadata :
3

 The first form of semantic data .

These basically includes:--

 Means of creation of the data .

 Purpose of the data .
 Time and date of creation.
 Creator or author of data.
 Standards used.
Little bit of History
4
 1969: paper Semantic Information
Processing by Ross Quillial.

 Mid-to late 1990’s Tim Berners-Lee coins

the term Semantic web
WEB:
5

 The web is a system of interlinked

documents accessed via the internet.

 Computers use network protocols to

communicate in networks.

 Web browsers use HTTP to communicate

with web servers.
Semantics:
6

 Semantics is related to the word ”syntax”.

BUT
 Syntax is how to say something and
semantics is the meaning behind what you
say.
Definition
7

 The semantic web is the extension of the

current web in which information is given
well-defined meaning, better enabling comp-
ters and people to work in co-operation.
The Semantic Web Layers
8
FOUR COMPONENTS
9

 URI – UNIFORM RESOURCE IDENTIFIER

 RDF – RESOURCE DESCRIPTION FRAMEWORK

 RDF SCHEMA

 Ontologies
Ontologies:
10

 It is the collections of information. It

includes:

 Concepts.

 Properties and attributes of concepts.

 Constraints on properties and attributes.

 Common vocabulary.
Contribute to creating the Semantic Web.
11
 Publish some globally useful data in RDF.

 Write an inference engine in the language of your

choice.

 Help in the developent of RDF Schema.

 Apply your own development backgrounds to the

Semantic Web.
PROJECTS:
 FOAF -Readable homopage

 SIOC (Semantically-Interlinked Online

Communities)
-vocabulary, image galleries

 SIMILE – Joint project

schemata/vocabularies/ontologie/meta data
BENEFITS OF THE SEMANTIC WEB

 A central repository for knowledge is created.

 Upgrades and maintenance are simplified.

 Application integration is easy and efficient.

 More precise, relevant information is captured

 Processes and procedures are mapped to data

sources.
Conclusion
 Rapid growth in the use of the web.

 Technologies and development focuses on the

way through which machines can understand.

 Even meaning of the published information

thereby making search of information and its
integration more efficient.
