MCC Module-02: GSM: Global System For Mobile Communications

GSM is a global standard for mobile communications that was established in 1982. It is the most widely used mobile communication system in the world, with over 4 billion subscribers using more than 700 networks across 219 countries. GSM provides high quality voice calls and supports data services like SMS and MMS. It offers improvements over previous analog systems like increased capacity, mobility, and security functions. However, it also has some disadvantages like a lack of encryption for user data and reduced bandwidth compared to wired networks.

MCC MODULE-02

GSM: Global System for Mobile Communications

Introduction to GSM

 groupe spéciale mobile (GSM) was founded in 1982.

 global system for mobile communications (GSM),
 GSM is a typical second generation system, replacing the first generation analog systems
 Most successful and most widely used mobile communication system in the world
 today many providers all over the world use GSM (more than 219 countries in Asia, Africa,
Europe, Australia, America)
 more than 4 billion subscribers in more than 700 networks
 more than 75% of all digital mobile phones use GSM
Performance characteristics of GSM (wrt. analog sys.)

• Communication
• mobile, wireless communication; support for voice and data services
• Total mobility
• international access, chip-card enables use of access points of different providers
• Worldwide connectivity
• one number, the network handles localization
• High capacity
• better frequency efficiency, smaller cells, more customers per cell
• High transmission quality
• high audio quality and reliability for wireless, uninterrupted phone calls at higher
speeds (e.g., from cars, trains)
• Security functions
• access control, authentication via chip-card and PIN
Disadvantages of GSM

 no end-to-end encryption of user data

 no full ISDN bandwidth of 64 kbit/s to the user, no transparent B-channel

 reduced concentration while driving

 electromagnetic radiation

 abuse of private data possible

 roaming profiles accessible

 high complexity of the system

GSM: Mobile Services
GSM offers
• several types of connections
voice connections, data connections, short message service
• multi-service options (combination of basic services)
Three service domains
• Bearer Services
• Telematic Services
• Supplementary Services

MS
transit source/
TE MT GSM-PLMN network destination TE
R, S Um (PSTN, ISDN) network (U, S, R)

MT: Mobile Termination

PLMN: Public Land Mobile Network
TE: Terminal Equipment
Bearer Services
• Telecommunication services to transfer data between access points
• Specification of services up to the terminal interface (OSI layers 1-3)
• Bearer services permit transparent and non-transparent, synchronous or asynchronous data
transmission
• Transparent bearer services only use the functions of the physical layer (layer 1) to transmit data
1) transmission quality is improved using forward error correction (FEC)
2) do not try to recover lost data

• Non-transparent bearer services use protocols of layers two and three to implement error
correction and flow control
1) adding a radio link protocol (RLP). This protocol comprises mechanisms of high-level data
link control (HDLC)
2) special selective-reject mechanisms to trigger retransmission of erroneous data.
Bearer Services
• Different data rates for voice and data (original standard)

• data service (circuit switched)

• synchronous: 2.4, 4.8 or 9.6 kbit/s
• asynchronous: 300 - 1200 bit/s

• data service (packet switched)

• synchronous: 2.4, 4.8 or 9.6 kbit/s
• asynchronous: 300 - 9600 bit/s
Tele Services
• All these basic services have to obey cellular functions, security measurements etc.
Offered services
• mobile telephony
• primary goal of GSM was to enable mobile telephony offering the traditional bandwidth of 3.1 kHz
• Emergency number
• common number throughout Europe (112); mandatory for all service providers; free of charge; connection
with the highest priority (pre-emption of other connections possible)
Non-Voice-Teleservices
• group 3 fax
• voice mailbox (implemented in the fixed network supporting the mobile terminals)
• electronic mail (MHS, Message Handling System, implemented in the fixed network)
• Short Message Service (SMS)
• alphanumeric data transmission to/from the mobile terminal (160 characters) using the signaling channel, thus
allowing simultaneous use of basic services and SMS
• EMS, MMS
Supplementary services
 Services in addition to the basic services, cannot be offered stand-alone
 May differ between different service providers, countries and protocol versions
 Important services
User identification
Call Redirection or Forwarding of outgoing calls
call offering services—call forwarding
• call restriction services—call barring
• call waiting service
call hold service
• multi party service—tele conferencing
• calling line presentation restriction services
• advice of charge service
• closed user group service
