CIRCUIT BREAKER

WHAT IS CIRCUIT BREAKER ?

Electrical circuit breaker is a switching device which can

be operated manually and automatically for controlling
and protection of electrical power system, under all
conditions at no load, full load or short circuit.
CIRCUIT BREAKER
According to their arc quenching media the circuit breaker can be
divided as
Oil Circuit Breaker
Air Circuit Breaker
Vacuum Circuit Breaker
SF6 Circuit Breaker

According to the voltage level of installation types of circuit

breaker are referred as
 Low voltage circuit breaker.
 Medium voltage circuit breaker.
 High voltage circuit breaker.

RECOMMENDED TESTING FOR
CIRCUIT BREAKER
 IR TEST
 CONTACT RESISTANCE TEST
 TIMING TEST
 COIL RESISTANCE TEST
 MOTOR WINDING RESISTANCE
 AUXILARY CONTACTS TEST
INSULATION RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT

DESCRIPTION:
Insulation resistance (IR) of high voltage circuit
breaker insulation is determined with a “megger” type
of a instrument, so named because the expected value
of resistance is in the millions of ohms.
IR Measurements are also made to assess the amount of
moisture and overall condition of the breaker insulation.
SIGNIFICANCE:
To evaluate dielectric strength of the Insulation system.
INSULATION RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT

PROCEDURE :

 Breaker open condition

 Applying DC voltage between breaker fixed contact to
Earth for the inspection of Pole -Earth IR resistance.
 Similarly check other two phases (Y and B).

 Breaker closed condition

 Applying DC voltage between breaker inspection of Pole
–Pole IR resistance.
COIL CURRENT MEASUREMENT

DESCRIPTION:
Coil currents can be measured on a routine basis to
detect potential mechanical and electrical problems in
actuating coils. The coils maximum current is a direct
function of the coils resistance and actuating voltage.

SIGNIFICANCE:
This test indicates whether or not a winding has been
short-circuited. Find the healthiness of actuating coils
DYNAMIC CONTACT RESISTANCE
MEASUREMENT
DESCRIPTION:
Check the healthiness of the Circuit Breaker Interrupter
and measure Resistance across the Fixed and moving
contact of the Interrupter at Dynamic mode
(CO operation).

SIGNIFICANCE:

To find out the healthiness of Arcing and Main contact of

the Circuit Breaker.
DYNAMIC CONTACT RESISTANCE
MEASUREMENT
PROCEDURE:

 Connect 100A DC current wires on Circuit Breaker

Interrupter.
 Operate the Circuit Breaker at Dynamic mode (CO
operation) and inject the DC 100A into the Interrupter.
 Finally measure the Resistance of the Fixed and
Moving contact of the Circuit Breaker.
CONTACT OPERATING TIMING
MEASUREMENT
DESCRIPTION:
The operating timing of circuit breaker to indicates any
problems in operating mechanism, alignment of main/arc
contacts and also difference between pole to pole.

SIGNIFICANCE:
 To measure Main contact timing (Close, Trip, C-O and
O-C-O)
 To measure Auxiliary contact timing.
CONTACT OPERATING TIMING
MEASUREMENT
PROCEDURE:
 Open both side earth switches.
 Make proper connection of test leads at break-1 and
break-2 for all three phases.
 Give command to breaker through by kit.
 Note the measurement values of Close, Trip, C-O and
O-C-O operating time.
CONTACT OPERATING TIMING
MEASUREMENT

The measurements may be made at normal control voltage

and the values obtained shall be nor more than ones given
below
1.Closing time =around 100 milli seconds
2.Tripping time =40 milli seconds

The above values are applicable to minimum oil, SF6 and

vacuum circuit breakers.
