LESSON 2 - Properties of Pure Substances FOR SCIENCE 7

This document discusses properties of pure substances and mixtures. It defines pure substances and describes their key properties, including having a homogeneous appearance, melting completely at a fixed temperature, and boiling at a fixed temperature. The document provides examples of these properties and asks students to identify substances and mixtures in different scenarios based on how they change state. It also discusses how components of pure substances can be separated through processes like electrolysis and answers questions to check understanding of distinguishing substances from mixtures.

MIXTURES AND

SUBSTANCES
Science 7
(Lesson 2: Properties of
Pure Substances )
LEARNING COMPETENCIES :
1. Distinguish mixtures from
substances based on a set of
properties;
2. Identify properties of mixtures
from substances; and
3. Enumerate the methods of
separating mixtures.
LESSON 2 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the session, the
learners should be able to:
-Define pure substances.
-Describe pure substance based on its
properties.
-Relate the importance of studying
substances in real-life situation.
LESSON 2 :PROPERTIES OF
PURE SUBSTANCES
In this time of
pandemic, let us
remember that God
is above in this
COVID pandemic.
C=ooperate during online discussions.
O= bserve punctuality in attending
classes and in submitting tasks.
V= irtually do your best.
I=ntensify attentiveness while watching the
teacher-made videos.
D=evelop focus and interest in the
discussion.
DO YOU KNOW
THAT SUBSTANCES
AND MIXTURES
DIFFER IN EACH
OTHER IN VARIOUS
WAYS?
NOW, WE WILL SING A SONG AND BE
GUIDED WITH THE FOLLOWING
QUESTIONS:
1. What is the appearance of a substance?

2. How does a substance melt?

3. What happens to a substance when it boils?

Song: I am Substance, I am Mixture

1.What is the
appearance of a
substance?

*Homogeneous in appearance.
1.How does a substance
melt?
2.*It melts completely.
1.What happens to a substance
when it boils?
2.*Substances have fixed
boiling point.
Pure substances are one of
the classes of matter. It is
homogeneous or with uniform
composition and appearances
are the same all throughout.
The temperature of a substance
is fixed and sharp. During
melting, a substance melts
completely.
1.For example: Water
2.= it has a homogeneous
appearance
3.= it melts completely in a
short period of
4. time as in ice form.
5.= has a fixed boiling
temperature (100°C).
In pure substance, the
components are chemically
combined. The component
parts are difficult to
separate except for water.
During the process called
electrolysis or by-passing
electric current,
components hydrogen and
oxygen of water are
separated.
THIS IS ELECTROLYSIS. A
Let us analyze this example: PROCESS THAT
SEPARATES THE
COMPONENTS OF WATER
WHICH ARE HYDROGEN
AND OXYGEN. WATER AS
PURE SUBSTANCE
UNDERGOES CHEMICAL
PROCESS TO SEPARATE
ITS COMPONENTS.
What are natural
substances?
Pure substances are one of the
classes of matter.
What are its
properties?
1.Properties of pure substances:
2.*They have uniform or homogeneous
appearance.
3.*It melts completely or smoothly all throughout.
4.* It has a fixed boiling point.
5.* Components cannot be separated physically.
LET US EXAMINE THE SITUATION BELOW:
Mrs. Cruz wants to know which of
the two solid samples is a
substance. So, she heated both with
the same instrument and amount of
heat. After some time, she observed
that sample B, melts completely,
while sample A has some unmelted
portion. Which sample is a
substance? Why?
Sample B is a
substance because
it melts completely
than sample A.
How do we relate the study
of natural substance to
practical life?
In everyday life, we can encounter
compount like hydrogen peroxide
and others. Understanding
substances made us realize that
the are helping us make our lives
easy.
What are the properties of a
pure substance?
(You may write your answer on
your Science Notebook)
ANSWER THE EXERCISES BELOW.
1. Nelly wants to compare the chemical
properties of the two substance. She
labeled them Sample A and Sample B. She
monitored the boiling points of the two
substances and found out that Sample A
boils at 100°C while Sample B boils at
120°C. Which liquid sample is a
substance? Why?
LET’S CHECK YOUR
UNDERSTANDING
1. Sodium Chloride dissolves in water very well.
Which is NOT TRUE in the following
statements?

A. Water is a pure substance.

B. Sodium Chloride is a pure substance.
C. Dissolving sodium chloride with water
produces mixture.
D. Dissolving sodium chloride with water
produces a new substance.
LET’S CHECK YOUR
UNDERSTANDING
2. A white substance is heated and tested. After
some time, it melts completely. What does it
imply?

A. It is a mixture.
B. It is a pure substance.
C. It is a homogeneous mixture
D. It is a combination of pure substance and
mixture.
LET’S CHECK YOUR
UNDERSTANDING
3. Liquid A boils at 100°C.
Which of the following could be
Liquid A?

A.Fruit juice
B. Softdrinks

LET’S CHECK YOUR
UNDERSTANDING
4. A gaseous material evaporates
quickly and boils at -40°C. This is
an example of:

A.metal
B. mixture
C. solution
D. substance
LET’S CHECK YOUR
UNDERSTANDING
5. Liquid A melts at 100°C while Liquid B melts
at 120° C. Which is true?

A. Liquid A is a substance while Liquid B is a

mixture.
B. Liquid A and Liquid B are mixtures.
C. None of them is a substance.
D. Liquid A is a mixture and Liquid B is a
substance.
ANSWER KEY
1. D. Dissolving sodium chloride
with water produces a new
substance.
2. B. It is a pure substance.
3. C. Water
4. D. substance
5. A. Liquid A is a substance while
Liquid B is a mixture.
ASSIGNMEN
1.ChooseTone pure substance and
describe it as to its appearance,
melting, boiling characteristics,
and how can the components be
