NAME 157: Hydrostatics & Stability

The document discusses the concepts of statical stability and metacentric height as they relate to ship stability. It defines statical stability as a ship's tendency to return to its upright position after being inclined by an external force. It describes how the ship is in equilibrium when its center of gravity and center of buoyancy are vertically aligned, and how inclining the ship creates a righting lever or moment due to the shift in the center of buoyancy. It further explains that a ship is stable when its metacenter is above the center of gravity, allowing it to have positive righting moments and return to equilibrium as it is inclined, while a ship with its metacenter below the center of gravity will be unstable.  Displacement
 Buoyancy
 TPC
 Coefficients of form
 Wetted surface area
STABILITY

Statical Stability

 Statical Stability is a measure of the

tendency of a ship to return to the upright if
inclined by an external force

 The weight of the ship acts vertically down

through G, while the upthrust acts through B. If
G and B lies in the same vertical line, the ship is
said to be in equilibrium

STABILITY

Statical Stability

 When the ship is inclined by an external force

to an angle, the centre of gravity remains in the
same position but the centre of buoyancy
moves

 The buoyancy, acts up through new centre of

buoyancy while the weight still acts down
through G and a moment is created

Statical Stability

 GZ is called the righting lever and expressed as

GZ = GM SinӨ

 Ship with a small metacentric height will have a

small righting lever at any angle and will role easily –
Tender Ship

 Ship with a large metacentric height will have a

considerable resistance to rolling – Stiff Ship
STABILITY

Statical Stability

 GM is positive when G lies below M – Stable

Ship
 If G lies above M – Unstable Ship
STABILITY

Statical Stability

 If G and M coincide, no moment – neutral

equilibrium

Finding the position of M
