What is Material Self?
• Understanding the self can be examined through its
different components: 1) Its constituents 2) self- feelings;
3) self-seeking and self preservation
• The constituents of self are composed of the material
self, the social self, the spiritual self, and the pure ego
• The material self, according to James primarily about our
bodies, clothes, immediate family, and home.
• The more investment of self-given to the particular thing,
the more we identify ourselves to it. We also tended to
collect and possess properties. The collections in different
degree of investment of self, becomes part of the self.

functions well and good

intimate closeness to certain part because of
its value to us.

self
• The material component of the self can include
books, bed, money, car, house, and other things
that person can call his own possession
IMMEDIATE FAMILY
• These people likely to shape and influence the
development of self identity
• What they do or become affects us
• When an immediate family dies, part of our
self dies
• When their lives are in success, we feel
victorious as if we are in their place.
• In their failures, we are put to shame or guilt
HOME
• Our experiences inside the home were recorded
and marked on particular parts and things in our
home
• It is where many aspects of your life have been
developed

identity

• Russel Belk posits that “...we regard our possessions as part

of ourselves. We are what we have and what we posses.”
• As we grow older, putting importance to material
possession decreases
• Material possession gains higher value in our lifetime if we use
material possession to find happiness, associate these things
with significant events, accomplishments, and people in our
lives.
• The possessions that we dearly have tell something about who
we are, our self-concept, our past, and even our future.
• People tend to measure success through
material possession
• Material possession can make people more
motivated to work harder to achieve them
• Lack or loss of material possessions can be
disruptive to the mental health of some
people
MATERIALISM
• The negative effect of strong desire for
material possessions
• Is an attitude of someone who attaches a lot
of importance to money and wants to possess
a lot of material things
