examine/read the (listening) text about
Barack Obama's Farewell Address to the
Nation on January 10, 2017.
Questions:
1. Who were the persons mentioned in the speech? Determine the roles
they played for the speakers.
2. What are the hopes and dreams of Obama for the United States?
3. How did he describe the younger American generations?
4. How did he describe his experience in serving the country?
5. What are the last requests to the American people?
6. What does “Yes, we did. Yes, we can” emphasize?
Answers:
1. The former President Barack Obama mentioned his wife Michelle Lavaughn Robinson Obama, about how she did
her role as a mother of his two daughters, a wife and how she took on a role he didn’t ask for and made it her own with
grace and grit and style and good humor.
He committed to President-elect Trump that his administration would ensure the smoothest possible transition, just as
President Bush did for him. He also mentioned his two amazing, smart and beautiful daughters, Sasha and Malia. And
lastly, he mentioned the former President of the United States --- Joe Biden, a great vice president.
2. The hopes and dreams of President Barack Obama for the United States is to still grow up and improve the country
by unity of all citizens there. By putting our attention on how our thoughts and actions affect our daily lives.
3. Former President Barack Obama described the young generations at his farewell speech by saying that young people
can change the world.
4. He felt honored to serve the American citizens and he also said that he is not the one who made America great but all
of the American citizens who perform their duty well.
5. In his closing remarks he said he had one final request for Americans as president: "I am asking you to believe. Not
in my ability to bring about change - but in yours." He also asked his fellow Americans, as individuals, to rise up and
do the same in our own lives because as citizens of America, we also need help to improve our nations.
6. “Yes, we can. Yes, we did'', emphasize to us that we can do what we want to do or we can handle ourselves and also
the country that we are from, we can make the changes to our country to be a better place.
Indicators Observation/Explanation
Word Choice The word he used at his farewell speech is great. You can
easily get what he is pointing out.
Cohesion The organization of his words, phrases and concepts are
well presented in speech.
Correctness The grammar he used in his speech is accurate. You can
easily get what he emphasizes.

the table.

Fluency Sen. Meriam Santiago clearly pronounced her words and her
concern for our country.
Tone Her tone was like she was willing to fight.
Pitch Her pitch is in the middle of highness and lowness sometimes and her
pitch is high in some words she points out.
Word Choice The words that she uses in her speech are right and easy to
understand.
Cohesion The words, phrases and concepts in her speech was correct and
organized. Factual and comprehensive.
Correctness Her speech has the accuracy in concept so that you can easily get the idea. Direct
to the point where in she caught the attention of individuals.
