LO: expressing one quantity as a percentage of another
Quite often in life, people find it convenient
to talk about amounts as percentages.
For example.
Teacher A says, ‘my class performed better in a test, 20 out of 25 pupils
passed the test’.
Teacher B said, ‘no, my class performed better because 36 out of 40
pupils passed the test’.
Who is correct? It’s hard to compare because they’re not out of
the same number.
Percentages are easy to compare because they’re always out
of 100
We know that 20 out of 25 pupils passed the test in Class A.
Remember, this line means ‘out of’ in a
20 Pupils passed the test
fraction, but it can also mean divide
25
20 X. 100
25 80% of class A passed their test.

We know that 36 out of 40 pupils passed the test in Class B.

36. x100
40 90% of class B passed their test

What is Simple Interest?
Formula for calculating simple interest
(S.I.) = (P × R × T)/100 and, Formula for calculating amount (A) = P + I

● The money borrowed is called the principal (P).

● Extra money paid back is called the simple interest (S.I).

● Interest is expressed as rate par cent per annum (p.a.) i.e., 12% per
month means, the interest on $100 for 1 year is $12.

● The total money paid back after the given time is called the amount.
22
calculating amount (A) = P + I

23
24
Formula for calculating simple interest
(S.I.) = (P × R × T)/100 and, Formula for calculating amount
(A) = P + I
1. Find the simple interest and amount in each of the following:

(a) P = $1800       R = 5%        T = 1 year 1. (a) $90, $1890

(b) P = $2600       R = 12%       T = 3 years (b) $936, $3536

(c) P = $3125       R = 15%       T = 73 days (c) $93.75, $3218.75

(d) P = $5660       R = 11%       T = 9 months (d) $466.95, $6126.95

(e) P = $180        R = 3%         T = 1¹/₄ year (e) $6.75, $186.75

25
Find Rate when Principal, Interest and Time are given:
1. Find Rate, when Principal = $ 3000; Interest = $ 400; Time = 3 years.

2. Find Rate, when Principal = $ 2100; Interest = $ 350; Time = 2 years.

3. Find Rate, when Principal = $ 10000; Interest = $ 800; Time = 5 years.

Rate = (100 × Interest)/(Principal × Time) Rate = (100 × Interest)/(Principal × Time)

= (100 × 350)/(2100 × 2) = (100 × 400)/(3000 × 3)

Therefore, Rate = 8.33 %. = 1.6 % Therefore, Rate = 4.44 %.

26
1. Find Time when, Principal = $ 1500; Interest = $ 450; Rate = 5%
Therefore, Time (T) = 6 years.

2. Find Time when, Principal = $ 2000; Interest = $ 600; Rate = 3%

Time (T) = 10 years.

3. Find Time when, Principal = $ 3500; Interest = $ 700; Rate = 4% p.a.

Time (T) = 5 years.
