PCM PPT Harshith Kumar P

PCM is a digital technique that involves sampling an analog signal at regular intervals, quantizing the sample amplitudes into discrete levels, encoding the levels into binary digits, and transmitting the binary codes. The key steps are sampling the analog signal, quantizing the samples into discrete levels represented by binary numbers, and encoding the digital data for transmission. PCM provides advantages like higher noise immunity, uniform transmission quality, and integration with digital networks compared to analog transmission.

PULSE CODE MODULATION

BY HARSHITH KUMAR P
WHAT IS MODULATION?
• Process of Varying one or more properties of a carrier signal with a Modulation signal

Pulse modulation:
• Signals are transmitted in the form of Pulses.
• Two categories
1. Analog
2. Digital

DIGITAL
• A code which indicates the sample amplitude to the nearest
predetermined level.
PULSE CODE MODULATION (PCM)

• PCM is a digital technique that involves sampling an analog signal at regular intervals and coding the measured amplitude
into a series of binary values, which are transmitted by modulation of a pulsed, or intermittent, carrier.
• To convert analog signal into digital signal.
• Signals are transmitted in binary codes.
• Techniques used in PCM:
1. Sampling
2. Quantizing
3. Encoding
• The signal voltages are divided into levels and each is assigned binary number representing the level close to it’s amplitude.
• First, Analog signal is converted into discrete signal by sampling.
• Then, we do quantization to convert these signal into digital signal.
• Then it will be encoded and it produces a digital data which are in series of binary digits.
• The number of levels depends on the number of bits used to express the sample value and it is given by N=2 m
BLOCK DIAGRAM OF PCM:
WAVEFORM OF PCM:
ADVANTAGES OF PCM:
• Transmitter efficiency is more.
• It is mainly used in long distant communication
• It has higher noise immunity when compared to other method
• Uniform transmissions quality.
• Integrated digital network.
• The PCM signal is more resistance to interference than normal signal.
• Low manufacturing cost.
• Good performance over very poor transmissions paths.
DISADVANTAGES OF PCM
• More bandwidth is required when compared to analogue systems.
• In this method encoding, decoding and quantization of the circuit have to be done. This makes it more
complex.

APPLICATIONS:
• Used in Telephony.
• It is used in Space communication.
• It is used in the satellite transmission system.
• One of the recent applications is the compact disc.
• Digital audio applications.
