Design & Development of IOT Based Smart Agriculture System Using LORAWAN

The document presents a project on the design and development of an IoT-based smart agriculture system using LoRaWAN. It consists of sensors like soil moisture, rain, and air quality sensors connected to an Arduino and NodeMCU module. The sensors detect environmental conditions and relay the data to a LoRaWAN network. If the soil moisture drops below 20%, a relay is triggered to power a water pump. The system aims to optimize farming through real-time monitoring and automated control based on sensor readings. It has the potential to increase yield and quality while reducing costs through precision agriculture enabled by IoT technologies.

1. Introduction of Smart Farming using IoT

•"Smart farming" is an emerging

concept that refers to managing
farms using technologies like IoT,
robotics, drones and AI to
increase the quantity and quality
of products while optimizing the
human labor required by
production.
•IoT is an integration of several
technologies, for example,
sensors, actuators, embedded
systems, networks, wireless
communication, and web
technologies, etc.
2. IoT ( Internet of things )- It’s Concept & Need

•Internet of Things is
internetworking of physical
devices. This system has
ability to transfer data over a
network without requiring
human to human or human
to computer interaction.
•The integration between
technology and farmers’
skills is aimed to produce the
best quality and quantity of
the commodity.
3. Purpose Of Smart Agriculture System

• Increased Production
• Real-Time Data and Production Insight
• Water Conservation
• Lowered Operation Costs
• Increased Quality of Production
• Accurate Farm and Field Evaluation
• Remote Monitoring

A. Sensors

1. Soil Moisture Sensor:- Soil moisture

sensors measure the volumetric water content in
soil. Operating Voltage: 3.3V to 5V DC, Operating
Current: 15mA,

2. Rain Sensor:- A rain sensor or rain switch is

a switching device activated by rainfall. Working
voltage is 5V, Operating Current: 15mA

3. Air Quality Sensor:- Air pollution

measurement is the process of collecting and
measuring the components of air pollution,
notably gases and particulates. Detection Range:
10 - 300 ppm, Heater Voltage: 5.0V
A. Modules
1. Nodemcu esp8266:- NodeMCU is a
low-cost open source IoT platform. included
firmware which runs on the ESP8266 Wi-Fi
SoC from Espressif Systems, and hardware
which was based on the ESP-12 module.

2. Lorawan Ra-02:- LoRa is a wireless

communication technology developed to
create the low-power, wide-area networks.
Operating Voltage 3.3V & Operating
Frequency 433Mhz.

3. Arduino Uno:- The Arduino Uno is an

open-source microcontroller board based on
the Microchip ATmega328P microcontroller
and developed by Arduino.cc
C. Other Components
1. DC Water Pump:- DC water pump
refers to a small water pump built by a 12v,
24v, 5v, 6v, 9v, 3V or 48v mini electric brushed
DC motor or brushless DC motor

2. DC Relay:- A Electromechanical switch is

called as Relay. It reacts as Automatic switch
to control (just ON/OFF) large voltage load by
using low voltage signal.

3. OLED Display:- Home Electronic

Modules Displays OLED Display. OLED is an
Organic Light-Emitting Diode. High-resolution
at 128x64 pixels. 160 degrees viewing angle.
Power supply AC3V-5V.
7. Live Demonstration of Project
8. Future Scope

The rise of IoT technology has led to the rise

of the smart farms’ concept. While IoT
devices for agriculture are only sparsely
available currently, their coverage is likely to
increase significantly in the future. IoT
devices can help farmers assess the
suitability of their soil for cropping.
9. Conclusion

• Smart Agriculture using IoT can have a booming

effect on today's agricultural growth. The
environmental conditions and the soil conditions can
be easily and accurately monitored with the help of
IoT based sensors. This methodology has a capability
of sensing the moisture, humidity, temperature and
obstacle.
