Music must never offend the ear; it must please the hearer. In other words, it must never cease to
be music.
OBJECTIVES
1.To explain time in music;
2.To define time signature;
3.Identify symbols used in time signatures;
4.To explain simple and compound time signatures.
TIME IN MUSIC
• In music time matters a great
deal. As a matter of fact,
music is based on strict time.
• Time/Meter in music refers
to the grouping of beats into
bars or measures for regular
movement of music.
OBJECTIVES
1.To explain time in music;
2.To define time signature;
3.Identify symbols used in time signatures;
4.To explain simple and compound time signatures.

WHAT IS TIME SIGNATURE?
• It is a sign/symbol, written at the beginning of
a music piece to show meter or time of the
music.
• These signs can be figures or other symbols

1.To explain time in music;
2.To define time signature;
3.Identify symbols used in time signatures;
4.To explain simple and compound time signatures.
USE OF FIGURES
• Figures are usually used to indicate time in
music.
• As a rule, two figures are used at the same
time. One figure written above the other like a
fraction. The upper figure shows beats per bar
and the lower figure shows each beat's time
value, e.g.
2 2 3 3 4 6
2 4 4 8 4 8

4.To explain simple and compound time signatures.
TYPES OF TIME SIGNATURE
Simple Time Signature:
For simple time signature, the top figure is not
greater than 4 it is 2,3, or 4.
If the upper figure is 2 it is called Simple Duple
e.g. 2 2 2
2 4 8
If the upper figure is 3 it is called Simple Triple
e.g. 3 3 3
2 4 8
If the upper figure is 4 it is called Simple Quadruple
e.g. 4 4 4
2 4 8
TYPES OF TIME SIGNATURE
Compound Time Signature:
For compound time signature, the top figure is a multiple
of 3 but not 3 (6,9,12)
If the upper figure is 6 it is called Compound Duple
e.g. 6 6 6
4 8 16
If the upper figure is 9 it is called Compound Triple
e.g. 9 9 9
4 8 16
If the upper figure is 12 it is called Compound Quadruple
e.g. 12 12 12
4 8 16
CLASS WORK
1. Answer true or false to the following statements
A. The top number tells you how many beats there are in each bar.
B. The bottom number tells you how many bars there are in each piece
C. ³₄ tells you there are three crotchet beats in each bar.
D. The time signature is written at the end of a piece of music.
E. The number 4 at the bottom tells you to count in crotchet beats.
