Partial Replacement of Cement With Limestone Powder

This document summarizes a study that partially replaced cement with limestone powder in concrete mixtures at incremental rates of 5% up to 20%. Testing showed that compressive strength initially increased when replacing 5% of cement with limestone powder but then decreased with further replacement. The conclusion is that cement can be effectively replaced by up to 5% limestone powder without negatively impacting compressive strength.

ABSTRACT
• Cement manufacturing produces a large amount CO2
which is considered as a green house gas causing
ecological imbalance by increasing the temperatures
globally.
• So the present work is carried out using lime stone
powder as a partial replacement material of cement
adding at an incremental rate of 5% reaching up to 20%.
M 25 concrete mix is designed and with these obtained
proportions, the strength characteristics will be studied
using limestone powder as a partial replacement material
for cement.
INTRODUCTION
• The Limestone is calcareous sedimentary rock mainly
consisting of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), commonly
called calcite Limestone is used in cement and concrete
for various purposes, namely, as a raw material for
clinker production and as coarse or fine aggregate.
• Replacing of limestone into Portland cement has been
widely studied for several years. Limestone is usually
consider as an inert filler material that improves the
hydration rate of cement compounds and consequently
increases the strength at early ages.
MATERIALS
1. Cement
2. Fine aggregate
3. Coarse aggregate
4 .Water
5. Limestone powder
TESTINGS
1. On Cement are:
a. Fineness test
b. Specific gravity test

2. On Fine Aggregate are:

a. Grading of Sand
b. Specific Gravity
c. Water Absorption Test
3. On Coarse Aggregate are:
a. Specific gravity
b. Water absorption test
c. Aggregate crushing value test
d. Aggregate impact value test

4. . The W/C ratio adopted for the study is

0.50% .
Methodology
• The study entitled "Partial replacement of cement with
Limestone powder" is done by M20 mix proportions
are followed. The cement is partially replaced with
Limestone powder in equal proportions reaching up to
20%. All these replacements are done at 5% intervals.
• M20 concrete mix proportions are used in ratio i.e.,1:1
½ :3
• After all the Workability is done we go for casting &
after casting curing is done for 7days and 28 days. And
we go for tests.
Results
• For Cubes:
When limestone powder is used as partial replacement of cement, @ 5%
the compressive strength increases beyond 5%. increments of limestone
powder, results has shown decrements in Compressive strength.

Limestone powder additions Compressive Strength(N/mm2)

5% 13.93
10% 11.25
15% 9.19
20% 9.7
• For Cylinders:

When limestone powder is used as partial replacer of cement, up to 5%, the

compressive strength increases, but later increments of limestone powder, results in
decrements of compressive strength.

Limestone powder additions Compressive Strength(N/mm2)

5% 5.09
10% 4.36
15% 2.73
20% 2.45
Conclusion

• From the results as we are drawn from the

Experiments & Finally, it can be calculated and
concluded that, the cement can be replaced by
limestone powder up to 5%.
