This document discusses structural dynamics and its importance in civil engineering. Structural dynamics analyzes how structures respond to dynamic loads like earthquakes, winds, and vibrations. It considers a structure's mass, damping, and stiffness properties. Simple structures can be analyzed analytically while more complex structures require finite element modeling. Reasons for dynamic analysis include safely and economically designing structures to withstand seismic and wind loads. Structural dynamics has grown in importance for designing slender and aging structures that are vulnerable to seismic and impact forces.

Topic-Dynamics of structures
In civil engineering, an understanding of structural dynamics is
important in the design and retrofit of structures to with- stand severe
dynamic loading from earthquakes, hurricanes, and strong winds, or to
identify the occurrence and location of damage within an existing structure.
Structural dynamics researches the dynamics of systems or structures
that have usually continuously distributed mass, damping, and stiffness
parameters. A continuous system has theoretically infinite number of degrees
of freedom. Simple structures (e.g., beams) can be handled analytically,
whereas complex structures are typically handled using the
finite element method, which has limited number of degrees of freedom.
Introduction
structural dynamics is a type of structural analysis which covers the
behavior of a structure subjected to dynamic (actions having high
acceleration) loading. Dynamic loads include people, wind, waves, traffic,
earthquakes, and blasts. Any structure can be subjected to dynamic loading.
Dynamic analysis can be used to find dynamic displacements, time history,
and modal analysis.
Reasons for dynamic analysis of structures

Structures can be designed using static

analysis but they will have to be overly
conservative to be safe. Hence, dynamic
analysis is carried out so that seismic loads
are modeled as accurately as possible and in
the process designing can be carried out with
a greater degree of confidence and economy.
The more you can model your structure near
to the actual forces it may experience, the
more economical design can be achieved.
Dynamic analysis is an attempt to do this for
lateral loads.
Structural Dynamics has gained
prominence recently due to (i) vibration
problems in slender structures that have
emerged as a result of new materials
technology and aesthetic requirements, Seismic damage of buildings

(ii) ageing bridge structures whose health

needs to be monitored and appropriate
retrofitting carried out to prevent failure
and (iii) increased vulnerability of
structures to seismic, impact and blast
loads. Knowledge of structural dynamics
Impact damage of bridge columns
is necessary to address these issues and
their consequences.

Single Degree-of-
Freedom Systems
Considering Figure, the forces resisting the
applied loading are considered as:
● A force proportional to displacement
(the usual static stiffness);
● A force proportional to velocity (the
damping force);
● A force proportional to acceleration
(D’Alambert’s inertial force).
● We can write the following
symbolic equation:-
Fapplied= Fstiffness+ Fdamping+ Finertia
Multi Degree of
Freedom Systems.
● Considering Figure, we can see
that the forces that act on the
masses are similar to those of the
SDOF system but for the fact that
the springs, dashpots, masses,
forces and deflections may all
differ in properties.
● Also, from the same figure, we
can see the interaction forces
between the masses will result
from the relative deflection
between the masses; the change in
distance between them.
