Observation Method

The document discusses different types of observation methods used in psychology. It describes the stages of observation as selection, recording, analysis, and interpretation. There are two main types: naturalistic observation observes subjects in real-world settings without their knowledge, while controlled observation studies participants in a contained laboratory environment determined by the researcher. Observation can also be structured, with behaviors predefined, or unstructured, where the observer records all relevant behaviors. The key difference is structured observation plans what to observe in advance.

OBSERVATION METHOD

IN PSYCHOLOGY

OBSERVATION METHOD
 Observation method is simply the observation of a
subject's behavior. It involves watching a
participant and recording relevant behavior for
later analysis

TYPES OF OBSERVATION
METHOD IN PSYCHOLOGY
 Naturalistic.
 Controlled.
 Structured and unstructured.
 Participant and nonparticipant.
5

NATURALISTIC
 Record behavior of subject in real world setting.
Examples:
 Observation of monkeys by some hidden cameras without
being knowing them humans' presence.
 You observe social interactions and alcohol use in a college bar
and take notes.
6

CONTROLLED
 It is a research method where researchers watch
participants in a contained environment such as laboratory.
 In a controlled study, researcher determines and controls
the location, time, the participants and the tools used to
complete the study.
The researcher decides where the observation will
take place, at what time, with which participants, in
what circumstances.

STRUCTURED AND UNSTRUCTURED

STRUCTURED UNSTRUCTURED

observation. staying with observed group or people
 Particularly used for large scale for a specific period or time.
studies and for testing hypothesis.  Is best used to look at a single
situation.
 Researchers just record what's going
on.
 Qualitative data collected here.
There is no advance designing of what, how, when,
who etc. Observer is given freedom to decide on the
spot, to observe everything that is relevant.
10

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
STRUCTURED AND UNSTRUCTURED

 In structured observation, observer identifies before hand

which behaviors are to be observed and recorded.
 While in unsaturated observation, no restriction is placed on
what the observer would note, all behavior in episode under
study is monitored.
11

EXAMPLE
 While observing the user accessing the library resources, the
observer may be able to observe several interesting things like
how they discuss with staff, how they getting the required
documents or books i.e. directly go to shelf or through catalogue
or help from colleagues. If some of the above behaviors are
observed, then saturated observation will be adopted.
