Pre-Calculus - Unit Circle

This document provides an overview of pre-calculus concepts related to the unit circle including: 1. Angle measure in degrees, minutes, seconds, and radians. The unit circle has a circumference of 2π radians and central angles that intercept arcs of length 1 unit have a measure of 1 radian. 2. Coterminal angles which have the same terminal side and differ by integer multiples of 360 degrees or 2π radians. 3. Finding the arc length and area of sectors using formulas relating these values to the radius and central angle measure in radians.

Angle
Measure
An angle is formed by rotating a ray about its endpoint. In the
figure shown below, the initial side of is OA, while its
terminal side is OB. An angle is said to be positive if the ray
rotates in a counterclockwise direction, and the angle is
negative if it rotates in a clockwise direction.
An angle is in standard
position if it is drawn in the
xy-plane with its vertex at
the origin and its initial
side on the positive x-axis.
The angles in the
following figure are angles
in the standard position.
To measure angles, we use degrees, minutes, seconds, and
radians.

A central angle of a circle measures one degree, written if it

intercepts of the circumference of the circle. One minute,
written , is of , while one second, written , is of 1’.
Example

Convert the ff. to degrees:

Convert the ff. to degrees, minutes, and seconds:

Recall that the unit circle is the circle with a center at the
origin and radius 1 unit.

A central angle of the

unit circle that
intercepts an arc of the
circle with length 1 unit
is said to have a
measure of one radian.
Example. In the following figure, identify the terminal side of
an angle in standard position with given measure:

Example. In the following figure, identify the terminal side of
an angle in standard position with given measure:

Radian Measure:
Since a unit circle has circumference , a central angle
that measures has measure equivalent to radians.
Thus, we obtain the following conversion rules.
Example: Express .

Coterminal Angles
Two angles in standard position that have a common
terminal side are called coterminal angles. Observe that the
degree measure of coterminal angles differ by multiples of .

Two angles are coterminal if and only if their degree

measure differ by 360k, where
