Cortex Processor

This document provides an introduction and overview of Cortex processors and the Cortex-M3 processor in particular. It discusses that ARM introduced the Cortex family in 2004 to provide features previously only available in high-end processors. The Cortex family is subdivided into profiles for high-end, real-time, and microcontroller applications. The Cortex-M3 is a low-power microcontroller well suited for real-time and embedded applications due to its ARMv7-M architecture, 3-stage pipeline, low power consumption, and improved code density.

ADVANTAGES
INTRODUCTION TO ARM
1. Advanced RISC Machine (ARM) Processor
2. RISC- Reduced Instruction Set Computer.
3. Features of ARM are :
Affordable.
Low power consumption.
Load store architecture.
Better battery life.
Large uniform register file.
Supports Pipelining.
Simple addressing modes.
Uniform and equally length instruction field.
Arm architecture is 32bit.

 It has 3 instruction sets:

 1. Arm instruction set (32-Bit)

 2. Thumb instruction set (16-Bit)

 3. Jazelle instruction set

It has 13 general purpose registers and 3 special purpose

registers; 3 stage pipelining (FDE) is used in ARM7.
INTRODUCTION TO CORTEX
 In 2004, A R M introduced its new Cortex family of
processors

 Cortex processor comes with many new features

previously available only in high end processors.

 Built on success of A R M 7 .
 The cortex processor is a low power processor designed for
embedded applications.

 They are necessary

1. To realize digital signal processing with low cost.

2. To meet the requirements of smart phones in the

market.
ARM VS CORTEX
Types of Cortex Processors:
 The Cortex processor family is subdivided
into three different profiles:

1. Cortex-A

2. Cortex-M

3. Cortex-R
 The Cortex-A has been designed as a high-end application processor.
Cortex-A processors are capable of running operating systems such as
W inRT and Linux. The key applications for Cortex-A are consumer
electronics such as smartphones, tablets, Digital TV Appliances.

 The Cortex-R series processors deliver fast and deterministic processing and
high performance, while meeting challenging real-time constraints in a range
of situations.

 The Cortex-M processor family is both cost and energy-efficient

microcontrollers. These processors are found in a variety of applications like
IoT, and in everyday consumer devices. Cortex-M cores are commonly used.
CORTEX - M 3:

 The Cortex-M3 processor is the first A R M

processor based on the ARMv7-M architecture.

 It is well suited for real time applications, even for low

cost platforms such as automotive body systems,
wireless networks and sensors and many more
FEATURES OF CORTEX-M3:
1. Arm v7-M 32-bit architecture. 4GB
2. memory space.
3. Great Performance efficiency.
4. Thumb/Thumb-2 instruction set.
5. 3-stage pipeline.
6. Low power consumption.
7. Improved code density.
