BOSCH CCTV Training

The field of view is the area that a camera is capable of capturing with its lens. A wider angle lens like 4mm will provide a broader field of view than a longer focal length lens like 12mm, which provides a narrower or tighter view of the same area. The lens selection depends on the viewing area and level of detail required.

No Pan and tilt functionality Panning and tilting is possible

Fixed or PTZ camera can be further classified as

• Color or Day/Night camera for normal lighting

• Infrared Camera for low light conditions with IR LED’s and can work
at total darkness
• Thermal Camera for long range detection with technology of heat

Infra-Red Illumination for
Security
Infrared illumination is critical for effective “round the clock” surveillance
Infrared delivers astonishing video during the vulnerable hours of darkness
FACTS

Infrared illumination is invisible to the human eye but visible to a correctly

specified monochrome CCTV camera. Infrared generates zero light
pollution ensuring a comfortable environment for people and wildlife

Infrared illumination, particularly LED based illumination, has incredibly low

power consumption compared with conventional lighting. Infrared delivers
major operational cost savings

Thermal Cameras Benefits
• Can see through smoke
• Can see through fog
• Image will be impaired depending on density of
fog but will be greatly superior to optical or

• Can see through rain
• Image will be impaired depending on amount of
rain but will be greatly superior to optical or

Lens
Lenses are the “eyes” of a CCTV system.

Two Functions:

It determines the scene that will be shown on the monitor – Focal

length It controls the amount of light reaching the sensor - Iris

L & T Electrical and Automation FZE

Length
 Distance between optical center of the lens and the
sensor
 Measured in millimeters (e.g. 3.7mm, 9mm, 50mm)
 Short focal length provides wide angle of view
 Long focal length provides telephoto view

L & T Electrical and Automation FZE

Sensitivity
Sensitivity describes a camera’s ability to “make pictures” in varying
levels of light. The higher the sensitivity, the less light required by the
camera to produce usable images.

Usable Video: An image that contains some recognizable detail, but

also has dark areas with no observable detail may be classified as
usable.

Full Video : When all objects in an image are all visible, it is described
as “full video.”

Camera sensitivity is measured in lux.

Camera Resolution

Vertical Horizontal
Resolution Resolution

Resolution depends amount of pixels

More lines = higher resolution , means better picture

L & T Electrical and Automation FZE

Field of View
 Field of view (FOV) is a measure of how large an
area a CCTV camera is capable of viewing. The
FOV is based on the camera and lens.

 For example, a 3 x 3m room is shown in the diagram.

The 4mm lens (green arrows) allows better wide-
angle viewing coverage than the 12mm lens (red
arrows).

 In applications where a closer view is needed (e.g.,

above a cash register or over a great distance), an
8mm or 12mm lens may be a better choice.

Video Compression

Compression – The reducing of digital data

by looking at numerical repeating patterns
or similarities.

Benefits of video compression:

• Less storage required – allows for more

image data in less storage space, reducing
file storage cost.

• Faster file transfer rates – allows for

increased flexibility and speed in transmitting
video data. Reduced transmission bandwidth
requirements.

L & T Electrical and Automation FZE

Resolution and frame rate
Resolution

Frame Rate

Video is collection of frames. The standard frame-rate for video systems is 25

fps (PAL) or 30 fps (NTSC). The human brain processes images perceived by
the eyes at 24 fps as fluid motion.

What is ONVIF?
 ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum ) is a standardized communication method
that allows various camera brands to be compatible to various management software or
recorders.
 Forum started by Bosch, Axis and Sony

 IP cameras shall conform to the ONVIF Profile S

 Bosch IP cameras and encoders are ONVIF conformant following Profile S
