Working With Objects

Shapes, icons, pictures, and videos can be inserted into Word documents to make them more visually engaging. These objects can be formatted and arranged using tools on the Format, Layout, and Picture Tools ribbons. Well-arranged objects that consider principles like the golden section and white space lead to aesthetically pleasing documents.

WORKING WITH

OBJECTS
SHAPES
Shapes are flexible objects that we
can utilize in creating images that
we have in mind. Let us insert a
shape in Word. In the Illustrations
group on the Insert ribbon, we
clicked Shapes; then choose a
shape. There are nine (9) categories
of shapes that we can choose from.

When formatting shapes, we do any of these options:
• Right Click the shape and choose Format Shape to open its pane.

• Double-click the shape activate the Drawing Tools Format

Contextual tab. Both have the same options.
We can also combine multiple formats. Below are examples
after formatting a chevron shape. It is under the Block
Arrows group.

Shapes can also contain text. To add text to a shape, we

right-click and choose Add Text. We can also format the text
inside by accessing the font formatting tools.

ICONS
Office 2016 added another value cue in
Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) format
that we can easily edit and these are
icons.
The Icons button is located at the
illustrations group from the insert
ribbon. Upon clicking, a gallery of icons
grouped in categories is shown. We can
click an icon that is suitable for the
content of our document and click insert.
To format an icon, we use the commands in the Graphics
Tools Format Contextual ribbon. Here, we can change its
graphics, graphics styles, arrangement, and size in the
document.

PICTURES
Another tool for us to associate
effectively with our readers is
through Pictures. When using
this tool, we have to consider
the license of the pictures and
give credit to the owners.
To insert a picture, we choose
Pictures or Online Pictures
from the illustrations group to
insert ribbon.
To get pictures from our computer, we use Pictures button.
Alternatively, to get pictures from the internet, we choose the
Online Pictures button.

When formatting pictures, we follow the same
steps when formatting shapes. We right-click the
image, then we do either of the two (2).

•Choose the Format Picture to load its pane.

•Access the tools from the Format ribbon of the
Picture Tools Contextual tab.
VIDEOS
Adding videos form online resources in our document is
another feature in Word. This way it is more convenient for
our readers to view the video right form the document.
To add this media, we do these steps:
1.Click the Online Video button
from the Media group on the
Insert ribbon.
2.The insert Video window
opens. From here, we can
choose Bing, YouTube, or use
Video Embed Code as the
source of our video
3.Type the keyword/s in the
search bar beside the chosen
option. In this example, the user
typed “outdoor sports” using
YouTube. It then displays the
searched result videos.
4. Choose one (1) form the results, and click insert.

5. After choosing a video, our document now looks like the

example below. Click the Play button on the center of the
video. It will fill the entire screen.
ARRANGEMENT
A document that contains well-arranged text objects can be
attained by applying the golden section or the design grid. By
doing so, we will produce an aesthetically satisfying amount
of spaces around any objects in a document.

Golden Selection Design Grids

Here are some examples. Let us notice the balance and
arrangement of the headers, paragraphs, and pictures with the
white spaces.
When arranging objects with the text of our documents, we
can use the tools found in the Arrange group on the Layout
ribbon. These can also be found when we right-click an
object.
POSITION
Choosing this command
provides suggestions as
to where an object will
be placed on a
document. By default.
The text is wrapped
round an object.
ALLIGNMENT
This works when an object is in line with text. To set the alignment.
We click Align button in the arrange group on the Layout ribbon.
We can also click any of the alignment buttons found in the
Paragraph group on the Home Ribbon.
WRAP TEXT
We choose an option as
to how our text wraps
around an object.
We can also right- click the object to activate the Layout
Options button. We click this button to see the various layout
options. Let us see the examples below:
ORDER
When we are working
with multiple objects, we
can use the Bring Forward
and Send backward
commands to arrange them
together by level. They only
work when an object is
wrapped in front of the text.
Let us see the example
below:
GROUP
To conveniently move objects in our document,
we can combine them as one using the group button.
To do this, we do these steps:
1. Select the objects by pressing Ctrl. The
cursor has a small plus sign on the next
object.
2. Click Group. The objects are in one big box.

To remove the grouping, we right-click the

object and click Ungroup.
