• Single assignment with two parts:


• Part 1 – evaluation of the concepts and benefits of leadership and management
and whether either has / is of greater value or not in terms of business operations
and organizational success
• Part 2 – an academic rationale of the purpose and value of continuing to develop
leaders and managers
• Both parts must be academically justified
• We are now going to test your skills – do you pay attention to detail?

• Go to Exercise 1 (in Study Materials) and have a go at the test

Exercise 2: Assignment Considerations

• You are now in a position where you have some knowledge about leadership and
management.

• Answer these questions:

1. What is Management? Make sure you appreciate the concept, not simply the
role of the manager.

2. What is Leadership? Appreciate the concept not simply the role of the leader.

3. What similarities or differences do you see / perceive?

4. Do you perceive one to be of greater value than the other? Justify

Exercise 3: Case Study

• You now have some baseline knowledge and potential appreciation /


understanding of the two core concepts.

• Look at the short case study provided and answering the four questions, think
about how you might apply that new learning to the situation outlined in the case
study.

• Avoid thinking there is a right or wrong answer and start to consider how the ideas
might apply and why they could / should or would work.

Assignment Relevance

• You should now have at least a baseline appreciation of management and


leadership. From here, you can now begin to explore differing perceptions of the
purpose and value of leadership and management, as well as leaders and
managers.

• You must be careful not to fall into a trap of simply describing what these things
are, but importantly focus how they add value in organisations, determining
whether one offers a greater purpose and value that the other (or perhaps not), as
you see it and are able to academically rationalize and justify your position.
