This document discusses key properties of fluids including: 1. Density, defined as mass per unit volume. 2. Specific weight, defined as weight per unit volume. 3. Specific volume, defined as volume per unit mass. 4. Specific gravity, defined as the ratio of a fluid's density to that of a reference fluid. 5. PROPERTIES OF FLUID

1. Density
2. Specific Weight
3. Specific Volume
4. Specific gravity
5. Viscosity
6. Kinematic viscosity
7. Compressibility
8. Surface tension
Density
• Density / Mass density / Specific mass :- It is defined as
the ratio of mass of fluid to the volume of fluid, Hence mass
per unit volume of fluid is called as density.
• Density is denoted by the symbol (rho)
• Unit of mass is = kg/m^3
• Density =
Weight density

• Weight density / Specific weight :- It is a ratio of weight

of fluid to volume of fluid, Hence weight per unit volume
of fluid is known as weight density or specific weight.
• Weight density is denoted by the symbol – w
• Unit of weight density is getting – N/m^3
Specific volume

• Specific volume :- It is a ratio of volume of fluid to mass

of fluid, It is the volume of fluid occupied by the unit Mass
of the fluid (1 kg)
• Specific volume is denoted by the symbol – V
• Unit of Specific volume is – m^3/kg
• It is a reciprocal of mass density.
Specific Gravity

• Specific Gravity :- It is a ratio of Density or weight density

of fluid to density or weight density of standard fluid.
• Specific gravity is denoted by the symbol – S
• for liquids Standard fluid is water and for gases standard
fluid is considered as air.
• It is also called as relative density.
Viscosity
• Viscosity :- is the property of fluid which offers resistance to
the
movement of one layer of the fluid over another adjacent layer
of Fluid
• Viscosity is a property of a fluid that determines its flow
behavior. The higher the viscosity the less easily the fluid can
flow. Air has a low viscosity compared to water, and water a
low viscosity compared to an automotive gear oil.
Kinematic Viscosity

• Kinematic viscosity :- It is a ratio of dynamic viscosity to

the Density of fluid.
• It is denoted by the symbol – (new)
• Unit of kinematic viscosity is – m^2/s , cm^2/s
