Mental Retardation

Meaning

• Mental retardation is a serious


disability.
• Children who have a condition
of incomplete mental
development are mentally
retarded.
• They are unable to adjust to day to
day living in a normally efficient,
useful, productive and harmonious
manner.
• They are in constant need or care,
protection, supervision and help.
• It creates a lot of learning problems.
• These learning problems create
obstacles in other areas of life as
well.
• This, total life activities are affected
by mental retardation.
Characteristics of
Mentally Retarded
Limited functioning
• They have difficulty not in learning
but also doing routine life job.
• Their level of functioning is very
limited due to to significant loss of
conceptual, practical and social
intelligence.
Sub average intellectual
functioning
• Their intellectual functioning is less
than average.
• Their IQ is below 80.
• This is the fundamental criterion of
diagnosing a mentally retarded
child.
Poor performance level
• When someone falls short in his
performance of certain tasks from
the performance of the of the
majority of children of his own age
is called to have low mental age or
sub-normal intellectual functioning.
Slow acquisition of skills

• Academic and non- academic


both types of skills are acquired
by them at a very slow rate.
Low level of adaptive skill
• They are not only slow in acquiring
skills but they are always poor in
adaptive skill also.
Early manifestations
• Mental retardation manifests
before the age of 18.
• It is viewed as a disorder of life
period characterized by the slow
rate of development.
Diagnosis of Mental
Retardation
Social adjustment criterion

• Mentally retarded children will


surely exhibit adjustment
problem in social situation.
• If he is functioning adequately
there is no need of sending
himm to child guidance centre.
Learning ability criterion
• Failure in educational achievements
is a criterion of mental retardation.
• Socio-economic and physical factors
should alsoalso be taken account
because they also affect academic
achievement.
Development Criterion
• When the child began to sit, crawl,
stand , walk and talk, etc should be
taken into account.
• Delayed development is generally
seen in mentally retarded children.
Academic achievement criterion
• Due to low level of retention power
their academic achievement is very
low.
• Despite repeated remedial
measures, if they perform poorly,
they are suspected to be mentally
retarded.
Size of family criterion
• Longer the size of the family, lower
will be the IQscores of the family.
Medical examination
• Tongue visible in between the teeth
with saliva.
• Vacant look and clumsy gait.
• Flattered skull, stanting eyes and
broad nose.
• Unusual large heads.
