Phase 1 Presentation

1. The document presents the methodology for a project that will model the mechanical and chemical behavior of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminated composite materials made from bamboo and jute fibers using artificial neural networks. 2. The project will extract and characterize bamboo and jute fibers, then use them to prepare a hybrid FRP laminated composite. Mechanical properties of the composite will be tested. 3. An artificial neural network will then be used to predict the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of the composite materials based on the experimental data collected, with the goal of reducing costs and time compared to traditional experimental methods.

INTRODUCTION
A composite material is made up of two or more
materials with different chemical and physical
properties.
Most man-made composites combine high tensile
fibers that are flexible, with a matrix that forms the
fibers into a rigid structure that acquires the
compressive strength of the matrix material.
ANN is one of the most powerful approaches used
in material science and traditional engineering
materials. It can predict the physical, mechanical
and tribological properties. It can also reduce the
cost and time in all required experimental
activities.
Constituents of Composite Materials :
Composite materials consist of two components,
1. Matrix (as the continuous phase)
2. Reinforcement (as the discontinuous phase)
Matrix
The matrix is the binding substance that holds the structure together and supports
the reinforcement materials. It's a crucial element for transferring loads and
determining key properties of the composite. There are three main types of matrices,
i) Ceramic matrix (for high temperature range).
ii) Metal Matrix (for intermediate temperature range).
iii) Polymer Matrix (for low temperatures and are mostly used as thermosets
and thermoplastics).
Reinforcement :
Reinforcement materials are the backbone of composite materials. They
impart strength, stiffness, and specific properties to the composite.
Common reinforcements include fibers (such as carbon, glass, or aramid),
particles, or flakes. The choice of reinforcement depends on the desired
characteristics of the composite, making it a critical factor in achieving
tailored performance for various applications .

Applications of Composite Materials

Some important areas of application of composite Materials are,
1. Aerospace Industry
2. Automotive Industry
3. Civil
4. Electronics
5. Consumer goods
6. Medical
7. Marine Infrastructure
8. Sports
9. Protective equipment
10. Power Industry
PREDECTION USING ARTIFICAL NEURAL NETWORK

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are a type of machine learning model

inspired by the structure and function of the human brain.
They are used in various applications, including materials science, to
understand and model complex relationships in data, which can include data
related to composite materials.
ANNs do not directly connect composite materials but are used as tools for
analyzing and predicting properties or behaviors of composite materials based
on data.
The accuracy and usefulness of the ANN's predictions depend on the quality
and quantity of the data used for training and the design of the neural network
architecture.
