PRE-COLONIAL PHILIPPINE LITERATURE
• This existed before the Spanish occupation in the 1500s.
• It is oral in nature and is full of lessons and ideas about life, its
blessings, and its consequences.
• It contains ideas from birth to the grave.
• The oral characteristic of pre-colonial literature gives the
possibility for many alterations.
• In the Philippine context, no matter how it may be considered
as altered, pre-colonial literature is still revered to by many
Filipinos.
• The sources are usually the local native town folk.
Literary Forms

Three Types of Pre-Colonial Literature

• Poetry (Panulaan)

• Tales (Tuluyan)

• Drama (Dula)
Poetry (Panulaan)

 sprang from sources close to the


personal relationships, social
institutions, religious and political
organization of the ancient filipinos.
Types of Poetry

•Riddles - battle of wits among participants

•Proverbs – wise sayings


A proverb is folk piece of advice expressed through short, brief sentences.
Most proverbs are related to local, beliefs, and traditions of a particular place.
Proverbs can be figurative or literal.

•Whispers – used to ask for permission or forgiveness to the other


worldly creatures such as “lamang - lupa” and “duwende”
All that glitters is not gold

Meaning: Something might not be as valuable as it


seems to be

Example: Radhika bought an attractive bracelet


recently, but it broke in less than a week. All that glitters
is not gold.
All good things come to an end

Meaning: Nothing great lasts forever

Example: It was a fantastic vacation, but


all good things come to an end.
Group activity.
For 10-15 minutes, create a minimum of five (5) and
maximum of ten (10) modern riddles whose subject is
an object, person, place, or event in one whole sheet
of paper.
Rubric:
Has given five (5) riddles – 50%
Observed rhyme scheme- 30%
Has used imagery in the riddle – 20%
Total: 100%
Actions speak louder than words

Meaning: What someone does means more than


what they say they will do

Example: She never bragged about her grades but


secured the second position in the board exams.
Truly, actions speak louder than words.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away

Meaning: Eating an apple daily keeps you


healthy

Example: You won’t fall ill if you eat the


fruits, an apple a day keeps the doctor away.
Group activity.
For 10 minutes, create a minimum of five (5) and maximum of
ten (10) proverbs. They are going to present to the class the
meaning of their proverbs and the rest of the class will guess
the correct proverb. Each group will present their works to the
class in a form of a game, the group who will have more
guesses of the correct answer will be declared the winner.

Rubric:
Has given five (5) proverbs– 50%
Members of the group are cooperative- 20%
Presented it clearly to the class– 30%
Total: 100%
Types of Poetry
Folk Songs
– a form of folk lyric expressing peoples’ hopes and aspirations, lifestyles,
and their loved ones

• Tanaga
– expresses insights and lessons in life
– The Tanaga consists of four lines with seven syllables each with the same
rhyme at the end of each line --- that is to say a 7-7-7-7 Syllabic verse, with
an AABB rhyme scheme.

• Epic- narrative of a hero’s deeds and adventures


Examples of Tanaga:

Tumatawag sa langit
Sana ay ‘wag ma galit
Tadhana’y makita
Malimot pagdududa
Ang pusong malimutin
Sana ay baliktarin
At hindi na aalis
Ang ngiti mong matamis.
• Epic- narrative of a hero’s deeds and
adventures
- An epic poem, or simply an epic, is a lengthy
narrative poem typically about the
extraordinary deeds of extraordinary
characters who, in dealings with gods or
other superhuman forces, gave shape to the
mortal universe for their descendants.
Group activity.
For 10 minutes, the students will read the summary of the famous Epic Biag ni Lam- Ang.
They are going to use their phones in reading the epic. After reading, they are going to answer
the following questions and present their answers to the class.
1. Give the region, the ethnicity and linguistics of the given epic.
2. What power does Lam-ang possess and explain how he survived in the quest?
3. What could be the good qualities of being a hero?
4. What is the general theme of these epic?
5. How does each text represent the region’s culture and practices?
6. In this new normal situation, who are we considered our heroes? How do we show
our appreciation of the heroes? Explain.
