Gas Suppression

This document summarizes the components and operation of a gas suppression fire protection system. It discusses the various types of clean agents used, including FM-200 and Novec 1230. The key components of the system are the fire detection system, clean agent storage banks, cylinder valves, pipes and fittings, and discharge nozzles. When a fire is detected, the detection system triggers the clean agent release from the storage cylinders through the piping network to the nozzles. Periodic inspections and maintenance are required to ensure safe and effective system operation.

NOVEC 1230(Fluroketone)
 Positives-
• No flooding Damage
• Low Concentration of Gas required
• Dose not cause ozone depletion (ODP: 0, GDP:1)

 Negatives-
• High temp. fire produces speed product of novec which
are toxic.
• High initial cost, agent refilling cost

 Extinguishing Characters-
• Liquid at roomtemprature , gasifies imideatly after
discharge.
• Maximum discharge duration is 10sec.
 Technical Info.
Low toxicity
Boiling point of 49oC

Super pressurized with Nitrogen with 25bar
 Application
Art Galleries
Computer operator rooms
Control Rooms
Electronic Equipments
Petro chemical Installations
System components:

 Fire detection system

 Clean agent storage banks
 Cylinder valves
 Pipes and fittings
 Discharge nozzle
Fire Detection System:

 Heat detectors
 Smoke detectors
 Auto actuation signals
 Control panel
Clean agent storage bank:

 Storage cylinders Should be located as close as possible.

 Each cylinder can be easily mounted and shall be fitted
with a non return valve.
 Quantity of agent should be monitored & any loss in
weight or pressure of more than 10% of agent in any
cylinder shall be indicated automatically
 Only one cylinders size and one filling pressure shall be
used.
 Filling tolerance per bottle shall be +0/-2.5% of normal
pressure.
Cylinder valves:

Cylinder valves should be of

 A pressure seated.
 High flow rate design incorporating a stainless steel
piston with seal.
 Pressure releasing for valve operation.
 Safety disc assembly.
 Pressure gauges.
Pies and fittings:
 They shall be made up of metal by seamless welding.
 Inside and outside of pipe shall be protected against corrosion.
 Special alloy steels and/or suitable protection coatings shall be used.
 They should not be damaged by their own weight, temperature fluctuations,
vibrations and release of gas or other installation inherent influences.
 Fastening of pipes will be secured properly near nozzles.
 Dry air/nitrogen will be blown inside pipes.
Discharge nozzles:

 The nozzles shall be

-arranged centrally & strategically.
-located in the upper area of flooding
zone.
 The maximum protected area per nozzle shall not exceed
the Manufacturers recommended range.
 Effect of discharge should not damage the component
being protected.
 Special care shall be taken if flooding zone height is
higher than 5m.
 In rooms with electrical & electronic risks the nozzle shall
be made up of corrosion resistant materials.
Working mechanism:
Fire prevention system:

 Prevent fire from starting.

 100% fire protection.
 Methods used:
1.Extraction of oxygen.
2.Production of nitrogen at site.
3.Fast reduction of oxygen.
Advantages of Fire prevention
system:
 Avoidance of further damage due to fire.
 Problem free adaptability to changes in fire risk.
 Wide ranging design freedom.
 Cost savings.
 Personnel retain access to protected areas.
 Permanent and preventive fire protection.
 Certainty of avoiding outbreaks and spread of fire.
 The fire prevention system should have a dedicated and
separate Air Handling Unit (AHU) system as per
protected area; no fresh air entry is allowed
Health And Safety Aspects

1. Audible and Visual alarm systems

2. Delay devices and pre-warning time.
3. To prevent discharge safely.
4. Piping must be electrically grounded.
5. No leakage of extinguishing agents.
6. Escape routes shall be available.
7. Doors shall be of self-closing construction and shall be fitted with hold-
open systems.
8. Proper ventilation prior to re-entry.
9. In case of manual venting of room, breathing apparatus shall be used.
 For standard application, the design concentration will be between 17%
and 13% of oxygen. The human body works well with an oxygen
concentration between 12% and 20.95% of oxygen.
 Conducting monthly inspections of system.
 Only licensed contractors are responsible for performing inspection and
maintenance of system.
 If there is a false alarm, the system can be reset. For early warning
HSSD(High Sensitivity Smoke Detection) Aspirating system can be installed
to prevent unnecessary gas discharge.
 Before entering a room, the operating mode should be set to manual.
Discharge hold off buttons are also installed in order to halt or reset the
discharge countdown.
Advantages

 It is very quick.
 In contrast to a sprinkler systems, it is designed to extinguish and not only suppress
fire.
 Agents does not have any smell or color.
 Friendly to nature.
 Maintenance is easy.
 Occupy lesser space for installation.
 Life safety systems with a warning alarm is installed to avoid accidents.
Disadvantages

 It can only be used in enclosed spaces.

 Risk of suffocation may take place.
 Accidents have also occurred during maintenance of these systems, so
proper safety precautions must be taken beforehand.
