DEFINITION

 Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a mental health condition characterized by an


inflated sense of self-importance, a constant need for admiration and attention, and a lack
of empathy for others. Individuals with NPD often have an exaggerated sense of their own
abilities and achievements, believing they are superior to others.
 They may have a sense of entitlement, expecting special treatment and exploiting others to
fulfill their own needs
TYPES OF NARCCISTIC PRSONALITY
DISORDER.
1. Overt narcissism
 a sense of grandiosity, a continuous desire for admiration, arrogance, and fantasies of
unlimited power and success.
2. Communal narcissism
 occurs in a group setting, individuals with communal narcism develops the sense of
importance and admiration from others
3. Malignant narcissism
 characterized by an extreme sense of entitlement, a lack of empathy, and a willingness to
exploit others for personal gain

CAUSES OF NARCCISTIC
PERSONALITY DISORDER.
 Exact cause of NPD is unknown (are not fully understood) but it is believed to be
influenced by
1. Genetics
2. Parenting and Upbringing
3. Cultural and societal factors
4. Trauma or Abuse
5. Personality Development
SYMPTOMS OF NARCCISTIC
PERSONALITY DISORDER.
 Grandiose sense of self-importance
 Preoccupation with fantasies of success, power, beauty, or ideal love
 Exploitative behavior
 Envy of others or belief that others are envious of them
TREATMENT OF NARCCISTIC
PERSONALITY DISORDER.
 Psychotherapy
 Medication
ROLES OF A SOCIAL WORKER
TOWARDS PEOPLE WITH NPD.
1. Act as educators
 helping them understand the disorder and offering guidance on how to support their loved
one.
2. Referral
 Social workers may refer individuals with NPD to other mental health professionals or
specialized programs when necessary
3. Advocacy
 social workers advocate for the rights and needs of individuals with NPD, working to
reduce stigma and promote understanding of the disorder
