Design of Liner Puller Presentation

The document describes the design of a hydraulic cylinder liner puller. It introduces cylinder liners and the problem of manually removing them. The objectives are to design a safer, easier to use puller. The design process included conceptualizing different models and selecting one using a design matrix. The selected design uses springs to adjust jaws and a hydraulic jack to pull. Detailed design and analysis of components is provided along with manufacturing and cost considerations. The conclusion recommends the design be implemented and checked further.

Inside Topics

 Introduction
 Problem statement
 objective
 Scope
 Conceptualization
 Design analysis
 Conclusions and Recommendations
1.INTRODUCTION

Cylinder liner
 cylindrical part to be fitted into an engine block to form a cylinder.

 Functions of Cylinder Liners

1.Formation of sliding surface
2. Heat extraction (Heat Transfer)
3. Compression gas sealing
2 . Problem statement

 Cylinder Liner pulling have been the problem in

many garages and automotive industries by
damaging the engine block, consuming time
because of the speeds of the machine and also
two or more operators to operate.
3. Objective
 General objective
 To design Hydraulic liner puller is a manual operating
machine mainly used for extracting liner from the engine
block of different engine sizes safely.
 Specific objective
 Traditional removing of the liner by using the saw for cutting which
is not safe for the engine block
 There are two and above persons operators to remove using the
existing removing methods.
 Operator needs much force to remove using the existing methods.
 There is maximum time required for removing the liner using the
existing methods which are the mechanical mechanisms
4. Scope
 Scope

 It is known that in Ethiopia there are many light

vehicles and light vehicle garages. From this
point of view the scope of the study has been
decided to be in the range of from minibuses to
land cruisers and other similar light vehicles.
5. Conceptualization

 This is the first phase of the design process at

which many alternatives are discussed,
compared and one among them is selected as
best way to meet the anticipated need.
Different alternative mechanisms assessed.

 Model 1:works on the application of spring

force for inserting and pushing the jaws for
pulling of different liners diameters.
Model 2:works on the application of friction.
pulling force on the rod cause the trapezoids
shape plates to contact and lock against the
liner by using friction.
Model 3: The L shape at the end holds the
liner and when applied the hydraulic force the
disc at the end of the rod push the brackets to
push against the liner.
 Decision and Conclusion
These points are compared reasonably for each alternative
using Design matrix relations.
The alternative in ‘Model 1’, mechanism is selected based
on the following points:

 Mechanical criteria: -distortion resistance, Frictional

resistance to pull, wear resistance,
 Physical criteria: -Average size of components,
Number of components, Complexity, Weight,
Operability maintainability etc.
 Materials criteria: -noise, Availability, bending
strength, Manufacturability, Maintainability etc.
Working Mechanism
 Stand the machine on the cylinder block using the
supporting rod
 Inserting the pulling plate in to the cylinder liner.
 the jaws will adjust to the required diameter of the
liner with the help of spring.
 Start applying the hydraulic energy with the help
of bottle jack
 Then The liner will pulled out.
Data collection
6. Design analysis
In this part all components that comprehensively make the liner puller are
discussed and explained numerically.
The parts are discussed as follows.

1. Main Pulling rod

Material for the main pulling rod is Marten site type steel

 Labor cost =2880 birr

Total Manufacturing cost= 8894 birr

Conclusion
Having the design completed, the whole project report shall be
concluded by forwarding the following points.
 Project background and objectives are discussed clearly; which
means one can get all the input and subordinate things to
hydraulic cylinder liner puller design properly.
 Conceptualizing level different alternatives that leads to the
final target are discussed .
One surely can say that the design outputs have generally been
illustrated more after having investigation on the different
assembly drawings and part drawings of each component.
RECOMMENDATION
 Do not use this machine to operate other than the recommended applications.
 Conduct an appropriate maintenance
 Conduct regular checkup on the machine
 Moreover less there was time limitations on working of the project, and
therefore it is recommended to concerned bodies to check the report
thoroughly again and make corrections wherever it has found necessary.
 Finally it is recommend that it is very advisable to implement this design
for practical use in garages and also pullers like this machine for pulling
bearing can also be designed and manufactured easily with available
materials in metal workshops.
