Lecture 13

This document discusses parallel operation of alternators. It describes the necessary conditions for parallel operation which are equal terminal voltages, equal frequencies, and same phase sequence. It then explains the synchronization procedure using methods like synchronizing lamps and synchroscope. The general procedure for paralleling generators involves adjusting the field current of the incoming generator until its voltage matches the running system's line voltage and checking phase sequence and frequency. Load is shared between alternators based on the droop of their frequency-power characteristics which can be adjusted by changing governor set points.

PARALLEL OPERATION

OF ALTERNATORS
Reasons for Parallel Operation
a) Handling larger loads.
b) Maintenance can be done without power disruption.
c) Increasing system reliability.
d) Increased efficiency.
Conditions for Parallel Operation
Necessary conditions for paralleling synchronous machine with
other alternators are:
• The terminal voltage of the incoming machine should be equal to
that of the alternator with which it is to be run in parallel or with
the bus bar voltage.
• The frequency of the generated voltage of the incoming machine
must be equal to the frequency of the voltage of the bus bar.
• The phase sequence of the incoming machine and the bus bar
should be same.

The process of connecting one machine in parallel with the other

machine or infinite bus bar system is known as synchronizing.
Synchronization Procedure
• Synchronizing Lamps
1. Dark Lamp Method
2. Rotating Lamp Method (Two Bright, one dark lamp method)
• Synchronoscope
General Procedure for Paralleling Generators
Suppose that generator G2 is to be connected to the
running system as shown below:
• Using Voltmeters, the field
current of the oncoming
generator should be
adjusted until its terminal
voltage is equal to the line
voltage of the running
system
• Phase sequence can be
checked by using
synchronizing lamps
• Frequency can be checked
by using frequency meters
or synchroscope.
Load Sharing between the Alternators
Load Sharing between the Alternators
• The active power sharing between paralleled alternators
depends upon the droop of the frequency-power characteristic
of the prime movers and governors.
• These characteristics can be slided up or down by adjustment of
the set points of the governor.
• Drooping frequency-power characteristics are essential for
proper load sharing between governors and the adjustment
thereof.
