Msma Calculation

1) The document provides an example calculation of peak flow for a 5-year ARI storm event for a 30 ha area being developed in Teluk Intan, Perak. 2) The steps involve determining the storm intensity using IDF curves, time of concentration, runoff coefficient, and then calculating peak flow using the rational method formula. 3) The calculated peak flow is 1.24 m3/s.

MSMA

CALCULATION
EXAMPLE 1

As a consultant, you are chosen to develop 30 ha area in Teluk Intan, Perak. The location was suitable for
Semi-Detached Bungalow with paved surface and covered with smooth finish concrete lined drain. By
using the data given, calculate the peak flow of 5 year ARI for that area.
Overland sheet flow travel time = 10 minute
Overland sheet flow path length = 70 m
Slope of overland surface = 5%
Hydraulic Radius = 20 m
Friction Slope =2%
Length of drain = 150 m
SOLUTION
• STEP 1 : DETERMINE DESIGN ARI,

From data given, ARI = 5 years

• STEP 2 : DETERMINE INTENSITY (I)

By using empirical IDF curves equation; urban stormwater management manual

for Malaysia

I=
SOLUTION

Refer to table 2.B I. Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia Perak – Teluk Intan –
Station ID 4010001 (JPS Teluk Intan)

λ = 54.017

Κ = 0.198

θ = 0.084

η = 0.790
SOLUTION

T = ARI = 5 years

D = storm duration, tc = t0 + td (refer to Table 2.1) Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia

T0 = ,

N = From Table 2.2, Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia = 0.015

L = 70 m

S = 5%

T0 = = 4.794
SOLUTION

• Td =

• N = from table 2.3, Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia = 0.015

• L = 150 m

• R = 20 m

• S = 2%
SOLUTION

• Td = = 3.60 x 10-3

• Therefore; tc = t0 + td

• = 4.794 + 3.60 x 10-3

• = 4.80 minute

• I=

• i = = 21.22 mm/hr
Step 3 : Runoff Coefficient (C)
For ARI of 5 years, from table 2.5 , Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia
C = 0.7

Step 4 : Determine Peak Flow (Q)

From Equation Q = C. I. A
360

Q = 0.7 (21.22) (30)

360
= 1.24 m3/s
EXAMPLE 2
As an Environmental Engineer you are awarded a project to design drainage system for Taman Ira, nearby SK Taman Maluri,
Kuala Lumpur which is in an urban area. The location was suitable for semi-detached bungalow with paved surface and covered
with smooth finish concrete lined drain. By using the provided data, calculate the peak flow of 5 year ARI for that area.
Area = 10 ha
Density of area = medium density residential area
Overland sheet flow travel time = 8 minutes
Overland sheet flow path length = 80 m
Slope of overland surface = 5%
Hydraulic radius = 20 m
Friction slope =2%
Length of drain = 400 m
